As a family we are struggling to know what to do. My Dad aged 88 has advanced Prostate cancer which has now progressed to his bones (rib, shoulder and pelvic region) He has recently undergone a one off blast of radiotherapy to try to ease the pain. All other treatment has stopped and he is receiving palliative care. His pain treatment currently consists of Codeine and ibuprofen, however he is still struggling with a lot of pain and discomfort. He has previously been prescribed oralmorph and patches but unfortunately has had a bad reaction when taking it. His appetite is also very poor. We would be grateful for any advice to help ease the situation as it is so upsetting for my elderly mother and the rest of the family to see him like this. We just don't know what to do.

  • Hi SK6

sorry to read about all the family are going through, it seems once it breaks out that’s the favourite places to attack, it’s the same for me. 88 is a great age, but not how you would like to see your dad, it can be heart breaking.
Have you spoken to McMillan nurses? They are excellent at giving advice help and can send a nurse to visit and just chat. There on here.

I presume your doctor has tried assorted pain relief, there are plenty of different medications that may help. For instance I had kidney stones earlier this year, I was given paracetamol I thought that’s the best you can do but it worked, although I preferred the liquid form acts faster, this is just an example, there are much stronger morphine, tramadol to name just two.
I know how hard these things are, my father and mother in law passed away from this disease. You just have to be there for one and other, having another person there even if you feel helpless is a big comfort.

    Stay safe

Thank you Joe. I do feel that now is the time for additional support from outside of the family. Will discuss the points you have made with the rest of the family!! Regards Sharon
