Hello all.  Have been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. At the moment have only spoken over phone,(not ideal). It appears my gleeson score? is7and my PSA 17. Two treatments have been mentioned, surgery and radiotherapy . Feeling a bit lonely, other peoples thoughts would be appreciated.

  • It all happens real quick from here so hold on and dont be afraid to ask questions all along the way, the op was so easy and painless I was back on ward in 3 hours and that's with a bit of complication but the surgery went ok and they did spare some of the nerves to give me some sensation down there !

  • Hi Pate 53,

My situation is very similar to yours.  I had the DVTs in both lungs in 2018.  Never regained full fitness, thanks to Covid.  Caught Pneumonia at the start of the first lockdown last year. Totally knocked me for 6.

I have been getting my PSA tested every 6 months. Any 2 in a row over 9, they would get me back in.

End of May this year, got a 12.3, triggered off the specialist appointment. Within a week I was seeing the specialist, one more week was a MRI Scan.  Came back inconclusive.  Another week, a biopsy (I was climbing the walls by then).

On 27th May I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer (Gleason 7, (3+4) Intermediate Risk).

Because of all of my other conditions l was unsuitable for surgery.  Only 2 choices were Hormone treatment and Radiation treatment, or do nothing.  Not much of a choice.

I am into my 7th week on the Hormones. 20 Radiation sessions booked in for early October.  The Oncologist is quite positive.

Enough about me. I meant to come on and say that you are not alone.  Hope it goes smoothly for you.  As you can see there are a lot of people in the same boat as you.

It helps me to write things down (doesn't help that my memory is getting worse).  I have always kept my emotions and feelings locked away, but to talk about them, it felt like a valve had opened up in my head and steam was pouring out (like a kettle).

    Good luck with your treatment.

  • Hi Steve,  From your response i can totally get your position, iam of a very much the same emotional state of mind ,i find it very difficult to share my thoughts (even with my wife) .  I even find the position i am in embarrassing. i am a carer for my wife and sometimes i find life a bit  difficult . I have six kids (all grown up) who are brilliant. Talking ? to people like you i find  relieves a lot of pressure on my mind . Any way in for pre op on thursday  fingers crossed. Thank you so much for the peace of mind  this brings me .Hope every thing goes really great for you!!!  All the best P53

  • Pate53,

Good luck with the Pre Op and surgery.  I don't know if I would have opted for surgery but with the decision being taken from my hands, it wasn't even an option.

As you can see from previous posts, surgery is a good option.

Any help or support you can get, I would grab it with both hands.

    Take care

  • Hi all.  Just had a date for surgery ,17 Sept.  That will keep the old imagination well stoked at 4.30am !!

  • Good luck with the surgery,  the nurses and surgeons were amazing for me and kept me calm throughout. I'm sure that you have made the right decision for the long term . For me I think it was the right option too just the mental battle to accept what is happening this was the difficult part for me, but there are p,plenty of helpful people on here and urology doctor/nurse are there on the phone with help and support , you are not alone , stay strong pate.

    Graeme.

  • Thank you so very much for your best wishes,it is a real comfort knowing there are so many people helping me on this journey. All the very best , and please do hammer those demons.

  • Hi Pate - my dad just been diagnosed and just started hormone therapy. Will also be having radiotherapy. His is stage 3 locally advanced but not spread out into lymph nodes or bones. There are a lot of people in the same boat and you are not alone.

  • Hi
