Great to find a group that we can share with other people going through the same thing.
I am doing this for my husband because he dose t use any computers or technical devices at all.
He had T4 prostrate cancer 16 years ago and had radical surgery to remove his prostrate. And for 12 year his prostrate remained at almost 0.
Then 4 years ago it started to rise then, 2 years ago it got to 8.2 as it is slow growing the consultant wasn’t to concerned but checked his PSA every 6 months in 2019 it rose to 10.5 but and stayed that way all year. So the consultant decided that he would have yearly checks but if it rose to above 20 he would start HT. the COVID happened! We had just moved so had to change our doctors. He didn’t have any blood tests the I decided I would ask the doctors to do a blood test. It came back at 20+ they phoned my husband and asked him if this was normal. ( my husband doesn’t understand the terms ) he told them yes. They left it at that. Then just before the first May bank holiday he had a nasty cough and coughing phlegm. I made an appointment and he was sent for a X-Ray. 3 days later sent for a CT scan. The doctor phoned and told him it looked like the cancer was in his spine and he had to go for a blood test the next day and result were through in the afternoon it show his PSA was up to 30+. He was sent to see the consultant and they put him on Bicaluamide 50g for 14 days then HT injections first one was end 26th next one is the 3 month one. He had another CT scan of his lower body and it showed the cancer had spread to his pelvis and spine. We are seeing another consultant on the 27th July to talk about other treatments. He is well and so far hasn’t had any side affects except tiredness, but he sits and knaps a lot before the injection He eats well. He said no matter what happen he isn’t having radiotherapy or chemotherapy. He is 78 ears old and feels he doesn’t want to sit and suffer the side affects. Will HT help him on its own? I know it won’t cure it.
Hi Tony78 sorry to see you on this site, but welcome anyway. I don't know if hormones by them selves will work the way you hope for,all I can do is tell you about my experience with treatment. I am 73 rapidly approaching 74, I was diagnosed in January with advanced prostate cancer which has spread to my soft tissue around the prostate and extensively to my bones. I am on hormone injections and tablets, yes there are some side effects all manageable, and just finished a course of radiotherapy which had no side effects. This is a good site to be on,some of the members have been on a long time, and maybe able to give you more information, which ever treatment your husband chooses, I hope all goes well for you both, best wishes and stay strong.

Hi, Sorry to hear about your husband's troubles.
The hormone treatment may 'hold' the cancer where it is for many months, but, there's no guarantee of that - it depends how advanced the cancer is at the cellular level - as well as 'direct spread' and metastases, the cancer alters over time in the cells themselves, initially becoming 'castrate resistant' (hormones not working) and ultimately they lose their 'prostate' qualities, becoming plain cancer cells, and resistant to most therapies.
Definitively well worth a try, and if he's lucky enough not to get major side effects, it could be quite a positive outcome. He is likely to to find the tiredness gets worse, however.
I can understand him being set against radiotherapy and chemo, but there may be a case for both - radiotherapy can be used to stop local pain, and may stop the advance of the spinal problems, all without many side effects. Chemo is often unpleasant, but things are changing all the time, and it's worth hearing what's available for him.

Heinous
If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.
Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.
Hi Heinous, Thank you so much for your reply. We will be seeing a Oncologist 27th July to discuss further treatment and hopefully how far the cancer has spread. The lady who gave the results on the phone was working from home and stressed she wasn’t a doctor. So I’m hoping that Tony will listen instead of joking with the doctors. He dose have the attitude that when your number is up! This upset me a lot.
He has had one HT injection and then from the 26th July every three months. He has been quite well and so far only tiredness.
Hopefully he will take your advise.
Regards
Good afternoon. We went to the oncologist this morning to talk about further treatment she firstly asked if we knew why we were there. We did. She said she was sorry but it’s not curable. She could offer him chemotherapy but it would make him ill and it would only extend his life by 10 months she also said there was a tablet but that to would make him ill and again only extend his life for as long. He is quite well at the moment just gets tired. He is on LHRT agonist. I asked how long the HT would work for on its own she said 2 to 3 years depending on how aggressive the cancer was. My husband was happy with that. So we have been left with having a PSA test when he has his HT every three months. Has anyone on here just been on LHRT agonist ?
i do feel was quite complacent.
Hi Tony
Very little positivity from the oncologist today.
Not sure how she would know that Chemo would only extend life by about 10 months.
Take a look at cancerresearchuk.org under clinical trials, there r some new treatments out there.
Also Chemo options more advanced than years ago, possibly not the same side effects as before.
Sometimes it can be worth getting another opinion, depends how well u get on with your oncologist.
Best wishes
Steve
