Hi all new to site just looking for some advise.
I’m 54 and was diagnosed with PC in April of this year. PSA 8.4 Gleason of 4+3=7 Grade 3 T2a. Bone scan and CT Scans clear, which was good news. I was given the option of either RT/HT or surgery to remove the prostate. I have decided to go down the surgery route not an easy decision.  I now have another appointment with another urologist on July 2nd, I’m hoping this is discuss the surgery and hopefully be given a date for the procedure.
with my decision made I wanted to ask if there is anything I should be doing now E.G diet/ excercise before my OP and also after the OP what to do with helping speed up recovery

Hi DJG, I was diagnosed back in March with a 11.4 psa and 3+4 Gleason  MRI and biopsy said cancer contained in prostate.  My choices were same as yours and I went for surgery to get it done and get it out. Surgery was on 2nd June. The more you read on here you'll see the choice is personal feeling on what is right for you. I have had doubts of my choice because of loss of libido and erection as well as shrinking penis ! But on the plus side the cancer is almost certainly gone and have slight incontinence , which can apparently last up to a year,  feeling good most of the time just getting used to much reduced sex life. The alternative treatment is a long road but seems to work for most . Good luck on your journey and know that you're not alone on here there's always support. GB.

Are you really, really sure you want to go down the surgery route? My Gleason test was 4+5, highly aggressive, but I opted for 6.5 weeks of radiotherapy (and the cancer has now been nuked) as I would not take the 25% chance or being in a state of permanent "leakage" that may be the result of surgery.

  • Hi Hotflushhell

    thanks for the reply.
Like I said in my comment the decision was not an easy one to make, I was advised by the urologist that this would be the best course of action due to my age . On reading up on the subject I decided it was the best option 1. Being once you have RT there is a chance of other problems mainly if RT Is not a success it’s harder to remove the prostate if not impossible also as your name suggests I didn’t fancy the hot flushes with the HT. Both options seem to have there risks but I want this out of me as soon as possible. Another factor for my decision was I live in West Wales the closest hospital to me for radiotherapy is a 120 mile round trip everyday for 30 days which I didn’t fancy . So hopefully I have made the right decision and a visit to the one stop shop in Cardiff and this will nightmare will be over. I hope your treatment is going well and wish you a speedy recovery

Good grief! How appalling that your closest treatment centre for daily radiotherapy is 120 mile round trip. It is truly unacceptable for the NHS in the UK. I'm in hot-flush-hell as my name suggests but, hopefully it'll only be for another year. I wish you all the best with your forthcoming surgery and, fingers crossed, you'll be back to a full functioning life very soon.

Well I have a telephone appointment with the urology doctor/nurse  28th June,  they have suggested a penis pump to encourage and boost the muscle and of course tablets are a possibility,  I know someone who had surgery 20yrs ago and said that even though he doesn't produce semen he does get incredibly intense orgasm,  I am still in hope of a functional sex life.
