I was diagnosed in July 2019 when 58. No symptoms and prostrate PSA of 5.7. Scan revealed shadows and resulted in a Biopsy with 8 cuttings being taken all of which were cancer. Bone scan was clear. Keyhole surgery in Sept 2019 was aborted and had full surgery in the October.  PSA test to date have been .006, .01 and .009 which is as good as it gets.  I feel lucky thus far but that is where I have my issues. It’s the what ifs. I continually struggle to think what might have been if I had not gone for the check. Lots to tell and share  but just wanted to give a brief history of where I am and why I have joined.

  • You were lucky, but the trouble with PSA tests is that they're very unreliable. If they were given universally, there'd be thousands of men suffering undue anxiety - often for years - constantly rechecking in case the scans had missed what the PSA suggested.

I'd love there to be a screening program, like the bowel cancer program, which has saved many lives and detected many cancers earlier than they would have been if people waited for symptoms (or ignored the symptoms!!).

But first we need a reliable test without so many false positives and false negatives. Dogs may be the answer, but it's early days.

If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.

Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.

  • Hi BG

Things r looking ok for you , good results after surgery.

I refer to your line on 'what ifs' and wonder why u would be dwelling on that. Even if it had been picked up later the outcome could still of been ok.

Try and look forward to the future instead of focusing on the past events.

    Best wishes
