Hi all
Hubby had an oncologist appointment come through the post this morning. It is on 4th August, which is 7 weeks after he is due to finish his radiotherapy. Does anyone know what this will be for? They haven't asked him to get his PSA tested beforehand; do you think he would anyway. He hasn't had a test for about 5 months which was 3.3.
He has his next injection booked for a few days after his last radiotherapy session. Should he ask the nurse to do one then or is that to far in advance?
Many thanks ️
Karen
Hello Karen (Dogs4me )
It's normal standard practice to have an oncology meeting (although it may be with a CNS or Macmillan Nurse) 6 - 8 weeks after completing radiotherapy. It's usual to have a PSA test around this time too.
The timing of this is to ensure all is well after radiotherapy, check that HT is going well and to establish a new base line figure for his PSA - even though the radiotherapy will keep on working for another 12 - 18 months.
Kind regards - Brian.

You should do a PSA test before each visit to the oncologist which will normally be at 6 month intervals and otherwise as directed by your healthcare team.
These routine appointments are normally to review your PSA and check on any ongoing side effects from treatment. They will always ask you about any adverse effects to your bladder and bowel function.
Hopefully nothing to get too concerned about.

Each Consultant is different, I had monthly appointments, with a blood test immediately after, the results are included in the letter to my GP. I then went to 3 monthly appointments after my 20 sessions of RT and again, a blood test immediately after the appointment.
The initial monthly tests were to check my bloods (PSA) and see how I was coping with Abiraterone. After the RT the three monthly took a little getting used to after the intensity of the RT.
My appointments just fell immediately after my RT.
Best of luck, if in doubt ring the department.
