Just completed prostate radiotherapy

Thanks to all those who gave me advice before I started my prostate radiotherapy on 4th February. I have today completed 20 fractions and can honestly say the side effects have been minimal. Needing the loo a few times first thing in the morning is a small price to pay for a curative procedure.

My experience at Mount Vernon was excellent - the staff there were all so professional, caring and acted with the utmost dignity at all times. Of course I will have follow up appointments, but hopefully the worst is now definitely over.

Throughout the process I kept myself fit - in the 28 days I ran 40 miles, also walked 56 miles (2 miles per day), and averaged over 11,000 steps a day (1 step for each man who dies from prostate cancer each year). These were challenges i set myself, and I'm pleased to have completed them. And I am 70!

Good luck to anyone awaiting similar treatment, but I can assure you that my experience was much better than I expected.

Take care, everyone.

  • Hello

Cracking post and well done in keeping fit at 70 - I to am 70 and twice this week have reached 11,000 steps (but I am on holiday Sunglasses).

I am pleased you found the radiotherapy OK and I wish you well moving forward.

I love those 2 words "curative pathway".

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Good news Parkrunner

I had mine done at M. Vernon  in 2017 and I also rated them highly.

    All the best

    Steve

  • That's great news. Bet your glad the treatment journey is over. I'm a bit behind you but I think my RT will be throughout April. Could I ask a wee question. It's the urine Flow Test i'm having problems with. I know I can do the business at home but due to some sort of stress/anxiety I fail the test (twice) in a Hospital setting. Just wondered if you had any problems. Good luck and enjoy the summer...

    Cheers Dave

  • I didn't have to do a Flow Test; I have learnt over the last month that there are many different treatments going on at the same time, depending on precisely what part of the prostate is being treated. I hope the hospital do everything they can to help you succeed. They all tend to be very helpful. Best of luck.

  • Well done, with the treatment and the exercise regime! In 2021 at 72 I cycled, on the road or trainer min 10 miles a day over the RT, 20 days over 4 weeks and I'm sure it helped.

I continued same routine during the 2 years follow up HT.

    Good luck, Dave

  • Thankyou for posting. This is so inspiring. I’m about to start a 20 fraction run next week, and have to this forum for as much preparation as I can. I doubt I’ll match your 11000 steps a day, but am now inspired to do far more than I intended.

    I wish you well.

  • Hello

Good luck with your 20 fractions - I don't know if you've seen this thread but it may help:

What you wish you had known before starting Radiotherapy?

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi  just read your bio : another example of one of my mantras: “histology is King”.  A pity they didn’t find the higher grade Gleason and aggressive cribriform in the original biopsy.  However, your radiotherapy will kill it  where it finds it - hopefully it hasn’t created micro mets (especially with your low presentation of PSA and asymptomatic), so good luck from me with your curative pathway.  AW

  • Thanks again to you all for your support and wise words and advice over the last few months. I am very pleased to say I met my Oncologist yesterday for my post-radiotherapy review and my PSA is now zero. You can't get any better than that! So I just need to continue with six monthly blood tests and complete my Decapeptyl course.

For those thinking "things I wish I'd known before rsdiotherapy", I can't promise miracles for everyone affected, but "curative pathway" really has worked for me. And long may it remain cured!

Wishing you all the best of health.

    Phil.

  • Hello Phil (
