Just a small question. BW’s lower legs are swollen. GP says - Bipedal pitting edema. He’s had an ECG and heart is normal. I know there’s several reasons he could have this - high salt/ lymph node draining problems, damage from pelvic RT, HT .to other problems. He’s recently come off steroids and Abiraterone and since then he’s had a few small set backs. We are on holiday atm as GP said go and have a good time and we will do blood tests when you are back. ( so he can’t be that worried) I’ve just watched BW walk away with swollen ankles and walking like a man of 90 when he’s 59. I’m toying with testing out the holiday insurance if his ankles get any bigger!
Finally my question - anyone else had this problem with it being linked to HT or full pelvic RT or PC/ lymph node drainage - Or stopping steroids.
His only medication at this point is Zoladex.
Any chat about it is fine. We are casually implementing legs up higher than heart . Low salt as possible, leg massage and yoga. Not making a lot of difference. Any tips ?

I suspect that has made the legs swell even more. Not sure there is much you can do about it, keep cool, legs raised, hydrated but you sound to be doing the right things. Enjoy your break.
Best wishes, David

One small aspect, I was diagnosed with PC whilst on holiday in early February. I contacted my travel insurance and they agreed to pay for my consultation and MRI, they even covered the biopsy, but I had to update every step of the way. (I was surprised as I said I would foot the bills no matter what)
I have since enquired about my cover when travelling, they stated if anything happened that could be foreseen and related to my PC, I was exempt. Anything else was covered. When you say test your insurance, I found communication to be the best thing. The cover and service was fantastic.
I ran up a bill just short of £8,000 in 10 days.
Hi KJ911
Good advice. Wow that’s some bill you ran up too! Also that’s crazy being diagnosed whilst on holiday, what actually happened to put you in that position of going to the doctors?
I have to say both of us never thought about actually flying back as we were so set on going and thought the edema would go down and not be a problem. (Positive thinking) It came on about three days before the holiday and at that time it was completely out of the blue. It did go down after a couple of days, but yesterday it came back. We have a week to go. It’s something new, maybe it’s related to PC, hopefully it will go down as before, if not I’ll report back on the insurance ( one of the fav topics of this forum)

I was in Dubai for Christmas and had an ear infection, saw a doctor who suggested some lifestyle checks, as a result I had a general scanning blood test on the Friday, results Saturday, everything was normal except a PSA of 34. Received a phone call and told to see a consultant ASAP. Saw consultant Monday, DRE said he thought I had cancer, MRI Thursday and result Friday. Insurance then said they would fly me home, but I said I would pay for the biopsy the following week, results three days later and flew home the following day. Biopsy was almost £7,000 inclusive of lab results etc.
Worst part was my UK consultant asked me ro have a further biopsy to check as it didn't match up. The rest is history, just had my 15th RT today.
HiKJ911
What an excellent Dr in Dubai, you could actually still be oblivious to anything wrong if you hadn’t been there. I think, if the legs don’t start to improve by tomorrow, I will phone the insurance and have a chat. Thank you for your feedback. I hope it all goes well with your next and final week of RT.

I’ve just adding on a bit of a revelation with the swollen legs. I’ve always known the importance of what you eat and how that can affect your body, supplements etc ( though you do need to run them by your Dr just incase before taking supplements ) so I was reading up about how sodium holds onto water, I read that potassium helps to release it.!! Light bulb moment !! - BW had a lack of potassium when taking Abiraterone and steroids, so much so that he had one -two bananas a day to keep potassium up. Since recently giving up both drugs he’s dropped the banana eating down to now and again. So yesterday he eats loads of pumpkin seeds and nuts (-high magnesium intake helps to absorb potassium) and four bananas (high potassium). This morning his legs swelling has gone down quite dramatcally- almost normal! I can only think that the sudden drop in banana consumption and potassium has had something to do with the pitting edema ! Mad as that sounds.
Hello Lorraine (BW)
I know it's a serious topic but I just read your post and it made me laugh out loud!! . (I love bananas but if I even look at a second one my Lorraine give me that look and the "one a day reminder").
Well if it's worked that's good news - enjoy the rest of the holiday.
Kind Regards - Brian.
