Hot Flushes

I had the last of my 3 Zoladex implants in April 2024 - a 10.8 one. I have sought advice as I'm still have daily hot flushes - the frequency varies from 2 to 5, each lasting a few minutes. I have been told that this is unusual and it's worth asking my GP about a testosterone check as this might be a possible cause.

If it's very low then HRT may be possible if it's carefully managed by my consultant. Has anyone experienced this issue before? I'm wondering if low testosterone could also be the cause of my low energy levels. However I'm also conscious that reducing my testosterone was one of the aims of the HT I had last year, so I assume any HRT would have to be really carefully monitored.

  • Hi  , my understanding is that the HT suppresses the testosterone and helps prepare the prostate for RT.  The RT should eliminate your cancer cells so you are effectively ‘cured’, then the HT is just a belt and braces to mop up any rogue cells.  Stopping HT your testosterone should increase.  I think it is a valid question to ask the medics, but if you don’t have any PCa cells around then to my mind it shouldn’t matter.  Please let us know the official medical line in due course.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • I had my second (and last) HT injection in February this year. Towards the end of my 20 days of RT at the end of March I had a face to face consultation with one of the medical team and I discussed recovering testosterone levels with them. Their view was you shouldn't do anything to artificially increase them, and just wait for nature to take its course.

I discussed the topic with another member of the medical team during a telephone consultation 3 months later and they said the same thing, with the caveat that they might look at intervening if things hadn't returned to normal by the new year.
