Chemotherapy - 10 cycles planned but unable to manage life after 5 cycles; alternatives?

Hi - my husband was diagnosed with Stage 3 Advanced Prostate cancer in January 2022; after starting on steroids, Proscap quarterly hormone injections and then Abiraterone in June 2022 his PSA dropped from 468 to 0.1. So far so good.....

But with an increased PSA in February 2024 hubby had radiotherapy which resulted in a lower PSA for 8 months - PSA then doubled for the following 6 months. He's now been on chemotherapy for 4 cycles(5th one in 2 weeks) and is REALLY struggling unfortunately. Fatigue(part of life since 2022) but this is now at the next level, low low moods, irrational thoughts and behaviour and negative obsessions. I am at the end of my tether!!

In 2 weeks when we meet our Oncology Consultant next we intend requesting a break/stop to chemotherapy. Does anyone have a similar experience and if so what was the next course of treatment please?

Thanks for reading - knowledge is power!

Best regards, Helen

  • Hello Helen (

I am so sorry to read about your husband's chemotherapy issues. It's quite common practice when people have any adverse reactions to the medication to reduce the dose from 100% to say 70/75%. This does make a difference.

Check with your husbands team if they think this would work - best to complete the course even if the latter doses are not at full strength.

    Best wishes - Brian.
