Hi folks .. I had my catheter removed today ... when I was at the hospital I was doing my wee tests .. the first one was fine ... the second one I had a bit of pain in my abdomen (not soreness from removal of catheter) .. third time was agony, with a really sharp pain on a scale of 9 out of 10 ... I had to do a 4th one and the pain was even worse and didn't go away. Now after 7 hours my abdomen pain has decreased after painkillers but it feels bloated, hard and very, very uncomfortable. The surgeon said that when they did the op there was a serious infection in my bowel and the bowel wall was stuck to the prostate.
The nurses said that it could be a combination of the inflames bowel and my bladder having to work again instead of being drained by the catheter (the gave me an anti biotic shot before the catheter removal and they said that should help any bowel infection) ........ I have this terrible worry that the re-joining of the bladder to the urethra hasn't worked and that urine is leaking into my body .. I know I know I sound like a right hypochondriac
I know it's early days and the nurses are right that it will, hopefully settle down, but has anyone ever had anything like this themselves
Thanks folks
I wanted to add that the pain is nowhere near you would expect if it was urethra soreness but inside my abdomen
Contact your GP as soon as you can about this. It may just be your body getting back to normal again but it could also be a problem that needs sorting so the sooner the medics are aware of this the better and the sooner it can be sorted for you. If you get no help from the GP then contact the hospital and speak to your key worker or Macmillan nurse if you have one - if not try and speak to your consultant's secretary.
Well folks .. after the pain getting increasingly worse I we ended up going to A&E .. I was rushed in and scanned and told that there was a hole where my bladder hadn't healed properly and urine was leaking into my abdomen .... so I was right !!!!!!! the doctor re-catheterized me and I was taken, by ambulance, to Haywards Heath hospital which is the nearest Urology department to Brighton where I live. .. I was in for 2 nights .. I am now home and have got to keep the catheter in for two weeks, then go back to the hospital and have another scan to make sure it has healed before removing the catheter... I am now dosed up on Antibiotics to prevent infection ...... I have never known pain like it .. thank God for morphine ..... onwards and upwards ... I personally think that taking my original catheter out after 1 week was a mistake, after all if the wounds on my tummy aren't healed then surely the internal wounds won't be healed either !!!!!
Wow! You’ve certainly been through the mill! I’m so sorry to hear of your troubles and wish you a speedy and uncomplicated recovery from now on!
Wow! Glad that its sorted and yes 1 week for catheter removal does seem a little early to me after surgery. Hope it all heals as it should now and you don't have nay more problems during your recovery.
All the best.
Thanks Freefaller ... originally they told me it would be a fortnight and gave me supplies (bags, straps etc) for 2 weeks then i got a call to say it was to be removed the next day which was a week ... I wonder if it was a mistake on their behalf and they put me on the wrong list
Off for my scan on Friday to make sure that it has healed up properly .. they told me i need to go with a full bladder .. with a catheter, yeh right
