I had a prostatectomy November 2022 I’m 74 years old and have thankfully had no incontinence at all.
At my 8 week post op consultation my PSA was 1.5 it has subsequently gone down to 1.4 should I worry about this unduly?

  • Hi GG

I think that PSA after surgery should be near zero, has your specialist commented on the readings. One thing though , at least the PSA is going in the right direction, see what the next one is

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • He has said they will discuss my results at their next meeting wit a view to prescribing R T but after having no problems post surgery I don’t think I want to go down that route.

  • Sometimes it's worth having the RT just to mop up any remaining cells but I think too early to tell as surgery only a few weeks ago

It's good that you feeling ok, give some more time

  • I had no long lasting side effects from RT over 6 years ago now and to all intents and purposes it has cured my cancer.  I think it is worth giving it a go.

  • Hi Greatgrandfather, if your post op PSA is this high there area still cancer cells around. Post op PSA should be <0.1. I would be pushing for scans to determine where these cells are. If they are in the pelvic area then radiotherapy will be necessary probably along with hormone therapy.

if there are distant cancer cells then it would be hormone therapy for life.

    I certainly wouldn’t ignore it.
    Best wishes,
