Hi,
My Dad went to the doctors about something completely different. He had a load of bloods and his PSA came back 16, DRE was swollen so a referral was made. This was at the start of August.
He had an MRI which showed abnormalities and git sent for a biopsy which he only had last Thursday 3months after the referral was made. The urologist has sent him for a CT scan and bone scan before the biopsy results have come back. Is this normal? Or does he know something we don't already?
Any comments are appreciated.
Thanks,
Yes this is good to hear. It is normal to get all these scans done before any clear diagnosis and decision on possible treatment is made and good that he had the MRI before the biopsy as the MRI will show exactly where the biopsy should be taken to give the clearest result. Its not worth taking the biopsy from a clear part of the prostate and missing the abnormality all together. When I was diagnosed this was quite often done the other way around and you would have had to wait longer for the MRI as if done after the biopsy you would have to wait until 6 weeks after the biopsy for the MRI so that the inflammation around the biopsy area had gone down. These results will go to a Multi disciplinary team (MDT)meeting which usually meets about once a week or so at the hospital so that they can discuss the results and decide on a way forward. If your dad does have Prostate cancer remember that it is slow growing so there is time to discuss the different treatments and which one he should choose.
How old is your Dad and is this his first PSA test?
Hope everything goes well for you and your Dad. Let us know his diagnosis and we will be only too happy to help and give advice once things are clearer and he has a diagnosis.
Thanks for your reply, I've read that if a psa is below 20 that's a good indication it hasn't spread. Is this information correct or isit best to stop reading
Hi Nick
Difficult to know why he was sent for bone scans, Mri must have shown something, and they are just checking to make sure that it hasn't spread . think fairly normal especially if Mri not too clear about what's going on. Looks like they didn't actually tell you what the Mri reported apart from abnormalities.
Psa at 16 is Ok, hopefully any tumour contained within gland. Biopsy results and bone scan should tell u everything u need to know, yes it's the waiting that's the worst.
Come back when u know more
best wishes
Steve
