On Tuesday I had a SpaceOAR Hydrogel and three gold markers inserted. I'd describe the experience as much better than getting biopsies taken, "repeating the biopsies with fewer needles". I appreciate that we and our circumstances are all different but so far the experience has been positive. I know that it reduces damage to the rectum by around 70% so if like me you've had bowel problems prior to prostate cancer it's a no brainer to getting a spacer. Anyway that's's what I think.

I hope someone will find this useful.

Interestingly, I met a chap yesterday at my treatment centre who talked about his spacer. Just to let me know that if I had to have one not to worry about it,

  • Whoever thought of the Spacer deserves a medal: such a simple idea, and very safe.

I wasn't eligible - some people with T3a tumours will be offered it, depending on the detail, but once the tumour is 'on the move', there's a risk of the insertion helping to spread it.

    Heinous

If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.

Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.

  • Hmmm.

I asked about a spacer and was told very firmly "we don't use these in Scotland'.

Certainly felt put in my place!

I had the SpaceOAR procedure undertaken prior to my RT Treatment in 2020 and apart from mild incontinence after RT treatment, have had no bowel or bladder issues at all. Very positive experience for me.
