Just been told. It’s sort of contained. I’m on the hormone pill and injection. My bmi is 35 so adds to how well I get on with what treatment I go for. I’m so very scared. Have it out and radiotherapy, or hormone and radiotherapy or what ? I’m 56, surgeon gave me option each carrying risk. Not sure what I’m asking this group , sorry

  • That's what we're here for!

It does depend a little on your PSA at diagnosis, your GLEASON score (from the biopsy), and your TNM score (Tumour, Nodes, Metastases - usually decided once all the tests have been done).

It's also well worth reading the 'toolkit' for general advice.

If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.

Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.

It can be very scary at first. But it gets easier believe me. I'm coming up to my fifth year and I was once sat chatting with a fellow patient that had had prostate cancer for nigh on twenty year.

You've come to the right place for help and advice.

    Good luck.

got oncology call next Tuesday and face to face with surgeon 14th. I’ve done reading and none the wiser.

  • I remember when I was diagnosed on 27th May this year I was in total shock.  I was there but not, there were all of these words coming out of the doctor's mouth, straight over my head.

It wasn't until I saw the reaction of my partner, she just burst into tears.  That set me off.

Trying to tell people was the worst.  I could say "I've been dia..." Then burst into tears.

    Sorry I am going on a bit aren't I.

Anyway, with my other health problems, surgery was a no-no, so I had the choice between "Hormone treatment and Radiation treatment" or "Do nothing."

Not much of a choice really.  I'm just starting my 3rd month of Hormone treatment.  I'm learning to live with it in all of its glory.

Radiation therapy starts on 5th October.

Hope everything goes well for you.

  • What do you mean "sort of contained"  Is it like mine and seen at MRI to be pushing on the capsule so they can't definitively say whether or not some cancer cells have escaped?  I had radiotherapy because of this - as at my age 73/4 it seemed pointless removing the prostate and all that that would entail and then  almost knowing that they would have to go back and use radiotherapy because of cancer cells left.  I opted for radiotherapy as they said it would kill cancer cells in the prostate and around the area had they escaped.  I am pleased to say that is nearly 5 years ago and PSA still undetectable.  Because of your younger age the best for you treatment could be different as they did tell me that had I been younger they would most likely have removed the prostate first.  It may be a good idea for you to contact your key worker or cancer nurse at the hospital if you can and talk things over with them.  If you fail to contact them - and these days it's probably harder to contact them then when I was starting my journey - and I only managed to contact her once by telephone and e mailed and waited days for replies 5 years ago, you can contact the Prostate Cancer UK Specialist Nurses on 0800 074 8383 - a free telephone number and they are available Mon-Fri 9am to 6pm and on Wednesdays 10am until 8pm.  I think my wife and I contacted them half a dozen or so times in the few months after diagnosis and they are wonderful and happy to talk things through with you.
