Hey so my dad was supposed to have a biopsy today but the decided against it due to his weight. I’m really stressed out a worried. They said they will do further tests but I really need someone to talk to as dad isn’t fazed by this which is good. Has anyone else been through similar??

  • What tests has he had so far and what are the results such as PSA blood test and MRI?  What symptoms does your Dad have and how old is he?

There are two different biopsies that can be done so they may be thinking of another or a more detailed MRI such as an Multipractic MRI or other scan.  Its good that your Dad is not fazed by this it means any treatment he will take in his stride.  It is always worse for our loved ones, wives, partners, parents and children.  Have a look at the prostate cancer uk website and if you need to call the Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses on 0800 074 8383.  the lines are open Mon - Fri 9am - 6pm and Wed 10am - 8pm.  Thes nurses were absolutely in valuable to myself and my wife during my journey.  You could also look at their prostate Cancer toolkit which is a collection of really helpful, easily understood pamphlets to read at diagnosis.  You can either read these online or download them onto your PC to read later or you can ask to have them posted to you if you ring - though I would recommend reading them online as obviously post is slow.   Ask as many questions here as you like I don't actually remember hearing of anyone in this same situation but there maybe someone here who has some experience to share.

I can’t remember what his PSA was but because he is a very large bloke he has had a high PSA since 2018 but has recently shot up. He had an MRI last week and as the to the results of that he was booked the biopsy today and has a bone scan tomorrow and ct scan on Sunday. I’m glad my dad isn’t fazed. Thank you for answering

  • So they are investigating because of the quick rise in PSA.  The MRI has shown that there is an area where there is the possibility of a tumour - whether cancerous or not and the biopsy would have been targeted to that area had they been able to do it.  The bone scan will show if there is any spread to the bones.  and MRI and CT Scan may show any other incidences.  They are doing all the right things.  I have heard said that if spread is shown then a biopsy would only confirm what they already know so although it seems like putting the cart before the horses it can be done this way.  if there is no spread then possibly they would risk a biopsy then - I don't know you really should ask one of the specialist nurses or your Dad's keyworker at the hospital or consultant.

    Take care
