Hi,
I am 5 months since my radical prostatectomy. I have not done my first PSA test as yet. Over the last few weeks my flow has decrerased and I have an urgency to pass urine every forty minutes or so. I am keeping myself hydrated with water but I do have one to two cups of coffee each morning. Do I need to contact my specialist nurse about this problem.
Hi Tbar2. I am not from this group, so no experience of prostate cancer. I have jumped across from the bladder group. The one thing we bladder sufferers are always advised is to avoid coffee. It is an irritant to the bladder. Saying that, any changes of this sort should be investigated and it would be wise to contact your nurse. This is what they are there for. It may also be wise to drop a sample off at your local surgery to rule out any infection. I hope it turns out to be nothing. Best wishes.
Tbar2 please contact you clinical nurse specialist or the urology dept. You should have had a psa test by now. As Riley points out feel free to contact your gp to rule out infection. The decrease in flow might be due to scar tissue from the surgery so you really need to get speak to someone
Anything that worries you should be followed up: what you describe is not all unusual - but that doesn't mean it's not significant. It may be.
On the other hand, @rily is quite right about coffee; maybe leave it out for a week and see if that makes a difference? Some people are quite sensitive to coffee, while others are not; PCa often seems to make the bladder 'trigger full' a little too easily. Worth a try?

Hi Tbar2
I am 18 months post rp I had same symptoms, due to scar tissue at join of urethra to bladder ,I have to self catheter twice a week to keep clear,it is not too bad though rather that than not being able to pass enough to empty bladder making it seem like you need to go every 30 minutes .speak to your specialist nurse they normally sort that out quite quickly
Good luck

Yes. You need to contact your specialist nurse. Also I gave up caffeinated tea and coffee years ago because of my prostate.
If it's any reassurance, I gave up coffee for while, and it didn't change a thing - so I'm back on a one cup of decent coffee first thing, and no more than one cup of instant later in the day. No problems. And I have been known to cheat!
Good Luck!
