Looking for some advice for my dad

My dad is 75 years old and had prostate which turned out to be cancerous. His PSA was under control for about a year and for some unknown reason it went downhill and he got the orchidectomy operation done.

Currently he is on hormone therapy , abione 250mg and omnacortil 10mg and takes zoledronic acid every month. Hormone therapy worked like magic for two months or so after that he has been complaining about a constant pain in his right leg. Initially he was taking two of abione a day but now he is down to one and has been taking pain killers ibuprofen to deal with this pain.

We have been getting regular checkups and his last checkup also was positive in terms of all functions were normal.

Is there anything else that can be done to deal with pain or manage in a better way?

Is the pain an indicator of things getting worse?

Thought i could get some advice from people who may have had a similar experience.

  • The HT can give pain as has already been said and it would generally be muscle pain so could be in any muscle.  What HT is he on?

  • Has he tried co codormol? That’s what I take for pain, you can get it in different strengths, there are plenty of pain killers out there, just depends what your tolerance is.

The HT my father is on is Abirapro - abiraterone acetate.

He normally complains pain the right leg but off late he says pain in the shoulder , sometimes in the  back and sometime ribs.

No he hasn't tried codormol. Will check on that, thanks.

Going to try physiotherapy to see if it helps.

  • Arbiraterone is supposed to be very good.  My brother-in-law John, unfortunately died of Prostate Cancer some years ago before arbiraterone was available and his widow often meets his consultant at various P Ca charity events and he has told her that if arbiraterone had been around at the time John would have had many more years.  Have you checked arbiraterone side effects online.  I don't know whether it has more or different side effects to other treatments.  You may find the side effects listed on NHS website which would probably be the best place to look.  Hopefully someone here who has experience with arbiraterone will also come on and give you some more info.

    All the best.

Here is my story since 2012 and it has been a journey of ups and downs FYI. Hang in there and live your life to its fullest-Jada

Started chemotherapy today and prednisone 2(5mg)

    5-23-2020

    PSA 14.6

I had bone scan and ct scans. I am having increase of metastatic disease so will change meds. I will see Carr Thursday and go from there.

DECNodules on adrenal glands and PSA up to 3.91 Still taking Enzalutamide

    Dec 02 2019

I had a CT scan 11/26/2019 and the right adrenal gland had two nodules that got bigger in past 3 months. If prostate cancer we will see if albiterone(Zytiga) and prednisone are working to slow the growth and drop the PSA. I am feeling good and still golfing and walking in HHI 5-6 months a year. Still praying for a cure

    8-2019

PSA 2.21 Ihad CT of abdomen again to compare with July.

My adrenal glands showed no changes so sontinue with Xtandi

    7/2019

CT scan- concern about 2 nodules on adrenal gland right and new cyst on liver. PSA up 1.57

    Continue on Enzalutamide and Xgeva

    6-14-2019

    PSA up 1.52

I got my Lupron shot for 6 months 12/13/19 from  He felt no clinical trials at this time and continue on Enzalutamide Xtandi until PSA got to 3.0. Will discuss with Dr. Carr and see.

5-23-2019 PSA is up to 1.07 so wants me to have a CT of abdomen/chest and a total body bone scan. We will probably go to albiterone and prednisone in July. We are going to look into some clinical trials to see if we can slow the beast down.

I met with my Doctor and felt we have kicked the can down the road long enough and must use antiandrogen meds now. I then met with prescription nurse and went thru side effects which are many. I then paid my copay $2840.00 for first month and will total $9,000.00 for the yeaexpensive meds however giving memore time waiting on the cure. Trying to stay positive and enjoy what I have going: golf, family and friends to help me.

PSA GOING UP- 0.1 to 0.3 to 0.7 as of 10-1-2016

    Nov 01 2016

My PSA is rising again to 0.7 after a month retest. My doctor wants me to stop Casodex and do another PSA in a month and then have consultation on next strategy. I am thinking positive and looking at my future options. If anyone has been where I am at now would appreciate your insights.

    PSA doubling in 6 months

    Sep 10 2016

My health has been pretty good since my last report. My PSA stayed 0.1 for the last 2 checks or one year-9-2015 and 3-2016. However the last blood study my PSA went up to 0.3 so doubled. Testosterone was 29 so hormone therapy-Lupron and casodex are working. We discussed the concern and are going forward with same protocol Lupron and Casodex and evaluate my PSA in 3 months to see if it is still ...

PSA went from 0.5 to 1.2 in 6 months. What to do?

    Jul 18 2015

We chose to do the 6 month lupron injection and Casodex 50 mg daily and evaluate in 3 months. www.nlm.nih.gov/.../a697047.html We discussed re-evaluating the 2 lymph nodes with CT scans/ MRI however chose to wait with small PSA increase. We know this will be done down the road anyway. We also discussed Provenge and prostvac  immunizations and chose to wait f...

Dec. 2, 2014 INTERMITTENT THERAPY DID NOT WORK FOR ME

    Dec 03 2014

I just got another injection to lower my PSA however this time it was an antagonist not an agonist(Lupron). Due to my PSA going up to 3.4 from 0.1 in 3 months My urologist did not want the flare from agonists like Lupron so we got antagonist drug for a month and if lowered we will go back to 6 months Lupron. I chose to do intermittent therapy 3 months ago and found out it will be best to contin...

    Oct 03 2013

I had my tests repeated for the first time since 11-2012 to see the effects of Lupron for my reoccurrence of PCA. The PSA is down to 0.06 from 15.0(11-2012) and my 2 lymph nodes are no longer swollen and are normal and my bones show no metastasis. All in all I feel great with the results and will be retested in 6 months again for the PSA as I just got another 6 month Lupron shot. I will continu...

    Lupron injection

    Dec 08 2012

I am waiting for the symptoms from the 3 month hormone injection-as of yet nothing. I am less than 2weeks in so heard it takes 3weeks before flashes and tired. I am taking vitamin c, shiitake mushrooms and other standard process vitamins and mineral...
