Which hospital...

Hello.  Besides choosing which treatment to have, as so many need to do, I have another decision to make.  I live in two places so will need to choose which hospital to have my treatment in.

Although all hospitals and Health Authorities follow the same guidelines and pathways, we know from occasional news items that some can fall a little short for a time while others can regularly excel.  But how is the patient to know which is which?  I'm not aware of any league tables or assessments to help in the decision, does anyone else have knowledge of a way to identify one from another?  The two areas are in the English Midlands and in the Edinburgh area in Scotland.  Thanks if anyone can help!

  • Hi Array and welcome

I don't think that there are any league tables, probably recommendations from other people that live in the area or have heard of excellent treatment centres would be your best bet.

I live in NW London and I could probably recommend a few good hospitals in the London area, also I have heard and read that Christie centre in Manchester is very good.

You probably need to hear from someone who has been treated in Midlands or Edinburgh  to get a good picture

    Hi Array,

In England you can use the Care Quality Commission's website to look at the hospitals in your area.  My hospital for example, was rated as "in need of improvement." (it still is).   They have 4 ratings from Outstanding, Very Good, In need of Improvement to Poor

Also, on the NHS website you can see what services each hospital provides.  More importantly you can see the consultants at each hospital with a table showing results of their work.  You don't need a name, just pick Consultant, enter your postcode and the names are listed.  Simply click on a name to open up the results.  So if you are having a prostatectomy this is definitely something to compare.

The Daily Mail did an article on the top recommended urologists in the UK.  Its up to 2018.  Again worth reading.

In Edinburgh, the Western General is the cancer centre.
