Nanoknife or IRE treatment of Prostate Cancer

Well it's taken me a while to make the decision to have Nanoknife treatment for my 3+4 prostate cancer, but after studying the possible side effects of nerve sparing robotic surgery which there seems to be an element of 'see what nerves we can spare when we get in there's' I have decided to not take the chance.

So I found Princess Grace Hospital in London that carry out Nanoknife treatments and I am attending a 3D Mir session in October (cost £1000) but the NHS Mir scans I sent to the hospital were poor resolution and the treatment needs to have pin point accuracy.

When I mentioned I had been referred for surgery I was told it is totally unnecessary.

Now this treatment is private and the costs could be close to £16000 but if my prostate is in tact with no nerve damage and no side effects, I would opt for that rather than change my car.

Will keep you posted on progress etc.

    Hi Dan

I also had a 3+4 but in both lobes, I decided on the Nanoknife treatment over HIFU because I didn't want to be on any preparatory hormone treatment etc. Also, I preferred the very low odds against ED and Incontinence.

I was self-financing so the decision didn't come easy thinking I may need a separate op for each lobe but Prof Emberton assured me if at all possible he would do both lobes at the same time, which thankfully he did.

The OP was a Day Case a General Anaesthetic and back to the hotel for an evening meal (plus catheter of course).

Well I have done it know and hopefully, it was a success and I can get down to fully recovering.

I am in London again on Feb 2nd to have the catheter removed and have a post Op MRI, so I will know more after that.

At the end of the day it's your choice and whatever works best for you, but I will keep you posted and best of luck with whatever you choose.

    All the Best Colin

    Hi Pete

Well it's been 4 days since the Op and I am feeling ok, I have come to terms with the catheter and the antibiotics are causing me a few embarrassing moments but otherwise I can't complain.

I get the catheter removed on Feb 2nd and also the post Op MRI so fingers crossed the Op was successful, will keep you posted.

    How are you progressing?

    Hi There

I have just had the Nanoknife op 4 days ago and touch wood I am recovering normally, I still have the catheter till Friday 2nd and I need a post Op MRI which I hope is favorable.

The Op as you probably know is just a Day Case with a General Anesthetic and back home for tea.

You are right when you say it's expensive I was self-financing and I don't have much change from 18k I can send you some actual pre-treatment and treatment costs if you wish, but I also had to add on rail fares and hotel costs.

Will keep you posted on recovery

Wishing you success with your treatment

    Hi Colin,

Thanks for your response, good luck tomorrow with catheter removal!

I would be interested in how you get on over the next few weeks before I go to see Prof Emberton at end of the month to discuss my options.

    Regards,

    Dan

Did your standard travel insurance cover you for going to Offenbach for medical treatment? Having trouble here and want to go to Latvia!

    Thanks, Philip

    Hi Phillip

To go on holiday I went through a specialist travel insurance who just excluded any issues to do with the prostate cancer. Think it cost £112 for a year travelling in Europe.

Got it on money saving expert but the prostate cancer charity can help as well.

I guess it covered the trip to offenbach but not for the op or related problems

    Enjoy Latvia

    Hi Dan,

Catheter removed on Friday, MRI done also, I'm back home now doing my pelvic floor exercises, the bruising is coming out which is to be expected but no real discomfort, just waiting for the MRI results now, as soon as I have any news I will keep you posted.

    All the best

    Hi Colin,

Thanks for the update and it sounds like it is all going well, with catheter removed you must be feeling more like normal again! Hope your MRI results are good; do you know when they will measure your PSA?

Can I ask did you have a template biopsy before the procedure as I have only had a rectal biopsy? I was wondering if the consultant insists on this to ensure greater accuracy.

    Regards,

    Dan

    Hi Cliffy,

Which travel insurance company did you end up with?

And how much did the Nano-Knife procedure cost in the end?

    Kind regards,

    John

    Hi John

    Used ‘insure for all’. Insurance.

Total cost was €16000 plus flights and hotels. I also had an €1200 MRI in Offenbach before the procedure to ensure they had good information to work from. The MRI I had in the UK under my insurance was OK for them to use but I wanted to make sure they had the best information

The €16000 covered 7 electrodes which are a one off use so the cost goes up depending on how many you have. I think you can have between 4 and 7 electrodes and they are about 400 each. So a bit cheaper for less.

For me it has been worth every penny as it has also sorted my bph issues and no after effects

    Good luck

    Pete
