My dad 66, had a routine blood test that showed his PSA was 14.7, and when it was repeated a month later, it was the same. He has no urinary symptoms. His GP referred him for an MRI, and about two weeks after the scan, he was told that a targeted transperineal biopsy of the prostate was being recommended based on findings . He was placed on the waiting list, which we were told could take around six weeks.
A few weeks later, my dad rang his GP because he was feeling very anxious about waiting, and the GP read from the mri report that it was likely to be prostate cancer but appeared to be confined to the prostate.
Since around the time of the second blood test, he’s had ongoing groin pain and discomfort in thighs and scrotum — he thinks he may have strained it when lifting something heavy, but the pain hasn’t fully settled. He saw the doctor again to check if it was related to the prostate, but an X-ray of his pelvis and thighs came back clear, as did the initial MRI in terms of spread.
His biopsy is now booked for 15th October, which will be about nine weeks after the MRI he had. We’re both very worried that things might have changed in that time, and he’s become increasingly anxious as he waits for the procedure.
What’s the likely outcome, do you think pain is related to prostate ?
Hi CD and welcome
From what you have said doesn't look too bad.ok probably is PC but PSA not particularly high and good if contained in the gland.
I know that waiting times seem like an eternity but it is next week and if ends up being a low key affair then not too much to be concerned about.
When possible it would be worth asking tumour size in mm which MRI should show , obviously the smaller the better, hopefully 12mm or less.
Anyway best news is if contained which means potentially curable,
Good luck with the biopsy
Best wishes
Steve
Ps , pain probably unrelated but please remember I'm not medically qualified
Prostate cancer is generally very slow growing so a 2-3 month wait for a biopsy is unlikely to make any significant difference to the diagnosis/outcome.
Hope all goes well with the biopsy and again take your time to consider all your treatment options and find the right pathway for your circumstances.
Best of Luck Rob
Hi Concerneddaughter13fd2e84 firstly I doubt with a PSA 15 and clear MRI that any groin pain is associated with PCa. Any new symptom I get, my immediate reaction is ‘is this a spread’, but honestly I don’t think early stages like your father he will notice any symptoms.
PCa is slow growing and 9 weeks won’t make any noticeable difference. We were all like you at the beginning, imagining that a few months will be crucial. Once the biopsy is complete after about 3 weeks you should get a Gleason score. This will be an indication of how aggressive it is (ranging from Active Surveillance to needs positive action). Armed with this, things will settle down but either way the current indication is that it is curable.
Best wishes, David

Hello Concerneddaughter13fd2e84
I agree with the posts above, the biopsy will confirm any cancer and the pain is more than likely caused by over doing something - it happens more and more the older you get.
Here's a link to our guide to the Prostate Biopsy The Trans-perineal-biopsy.
I hope this goes well. Feel free to ask any questions once dad gets his results.
Best wishes - Brian.

Lots of wise words already in the replies.
I've just had my firdt biopsy and results. Oh the waiting! Intrusive thoughts. Googling when I should have been working.. preparing questions for every result..
I thought I'd share my experience of the biopsy procedure, mine just a few weeks ago. Trivial. Mild. A non event. My anticipation was far worse than the reality. But then 4 weeks waiting for the results.
Yes there's some minor discomfort and blood in pee & ejaculate (sorry but your dad most probably does still ejaculate).
Fingers crossed it'll be a mild outcome too.

October 2025 Biopsy - Gleason 6, and CPG 1; July 25 PSA=6; T2A N0 M0. Active Surveillance.
Update:
Dad had biopsy today - wasn’t as bad as he imagined ..
Urologist said mri showed 2 small spots on prostate so took 3 samples from one and 2 from the other.
They were very pleased that he had no urinary complaints or anything like that and seemed to think his pain was all linked to the sciatica he suffers from time to time.
4 week wait now though so more anxiety for results but fingers crossed
Hi Concerneddaughter13fd2e84 that is a step forward. There waiting is horrible but he will be fine. Keep us posted.
Best wishes, David
