Following completion of my radiotherapy treatment just over a year ago for prostate cancer, I am 18 months into a 3 year course of hormone therapy. The hormone therapy has never been without side effects. All the stuff I was warned about has happened. Hot sweats, lack of libido, and debilitating tiredness are daily fact of life. However, with a psa count now barely measurable, I am not grumbling. But recently there has been a worrying development. My legs have broken out in an itchy rash which the chemist has identified as varicose eczema. Although 79 years old, I am not overweight, extremely active and have very few varicose veins. It has been suggested to me that the female hormones I receive every 12 weeks could be responsible. I have made a doctor's appointment, but that will be 5 weeks away!!! This post is to enquire whether any one else has had similar side effects (varicose eczema) from hormone therapy?
Hello MountPeter
If you read my journey (click on my name or avatar) you will see that during my Hormone Therapy I had about 3 months where I had itchy skin all over my body.
At first I tried every moisturiser going (The best was Child's Farm moisturiser) but my GP gave me a prescription for Aproderm Emoiiient Cream and that did the trick - I've just checked and you can get it on Amazon.
I hope you can find a solution - you are not alone!
Best wishes - Brian.

I can’t help you as I don’t know anything about the varicose eczema the chemist diagnosed you with but I would get your cancer team to get a look at it. If it’s caused by HT then you should be able to get seen sooner.
My history of HT is crazy too. But I’ve realised that the cancer has side effects, painkillers and heart pills are as bad with similar side effects. As for co-morbidities like varicose veins I’m sure or my own heart or blood issues will give both you and me more and more odd side effects. As for the treatments we take of all the cocktails of chemicals, some time for acute or chronic problems, they stay with us and plague us with future troubles. All I’m saying is think outside the box and keep an open mind. HT might be the one thing that is helping you the most so be patient and try all possible head clinical staff that are available to you - maybe you already have. Self advocacy will fill your time and maybe get a diagnosis and treatment sooner - with any luck.
We have very complex bodies and we are all different. I’m not an expert but I’m very jealous of you being 18 years older than me and so active. I hope some expert will help you soon and I wish you all the best. I know only to well what waiting is like.
Hi MountPeter , I find it appalling that you can’t be seen for 5 weeks. That said, if you are only seeing a GP it will likely be ages before you get to talk to an expert. Personally, I would talk to my cancer team and try to get a dermatologist (or whatever they recommend) appointment via that route.
Best wishes, David
