Hi.  My husband has his biopsy on Friday.  Could you give me some idea what to expect, advice etc.  should I go with him or just drop him off and collect him ?  What was others experiences afterwards ? thank you x

  • I had mine last Wednesday,

Consultant talked though the MRI and advised the Biopsy.

He was quite frank that it isn't pleasant but needs doing.

He said if it as too painful he would stop and book for general anesthetic.

It was painful but not overly, very similar in pain to the vasectomy last year. Just the needle pain, the actual sampling bit was fine.

It's not a problem, 15 mins for me of concentration on breathing. The staff keep you busy talking .

Then back to a room for a brew. A bit shaky and sweaty afterwards but fine just adrenaline. Mrs drove home but I was OK.

No real pain after, bit of bruising and uncomfortable for a few days. Blood in urine 7 days. Blood in semen still.

    He'll be fine Thumbsup

  • Personally, they gave me 2x paracetamol in the waiting area, and I don’t recall any problems thereafter.

    Best to have a chauffeur!

  • Thank you for replying.  Did your wife come in and wait or drop you off and pick you up when you were ready ?

  • She waited, appointment was on time so not a long wait.

  • Doesn’t sound too bad.  Good luck with the results.

  • Personally, my experience was fine. More uncomfortable than painful. The staff were very respectful, I don’t think he should be too worried. I drove afterwards but a chauffeur would have been preferable. Hope it goes well for him.

  • Had mine last Tuesday  , results call today ...good luck mate.

  • Hello

Here's a link to our guide:

    Trans-perineal-biopsy.

I had mine over 3 years ago now and it was the old TRUSS biopsy so I can't comment on the "new" TP biopsy.

Personally I would drop him off and collect him later - just to be safe.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello

It's almost exactly two years since I had my TP biopsy and can honestly say that apart from some embarrassment if things take your OH that way there will be nothing to it. Slight stinging when the local anesthetic is administered and that's it.

A good friend who had been through the procedure a while before and had worked in the medical profession compared the sample equipment as a 'reverse potato gun' which in a way it may be, your OH will hear that being activated but is unlikely to feel anything.

I had a young female nurse 'holding my hand' (they are all young when you are 74) and she and I joked throughout the procedure.

After the procedure we (there were four of us booked for the same session) had to be able to pass urine before being allowed home and that was it.
I was chauffeured both ways but that is the way of my wife, in reality I would have had no problem driving myself.

In my hospital trust the consultant / surgeon 'seals' the biopsy points with some sort of glue after the procedure, if your OH's hospital uses the same system he may find that removing that glue some days later is actually more painful than the actual procedure.  I will leave you to consider why!

  • This is a great reply.  I just read it to my husband and described as a potato gun seems to make perfect sense to him.   I hope that you’re well.  Thank you
