Anyone been prescribed folic supplement for low folic acid anemia..hubby on hormone therapy ?

  • I have been prescribed it several times in the past.

I was also tested for vitamin B12 defiency around three years ago and had 6 injections of B12 over a fortnight

My hormone therapy seemed to hav created a lot of bad effects on me, my sister said get your B12 checked again, went to GP to.ask for test, same GP who discovered my PC, he looked back at my records and couldn't understand why I hadn't been on B12 every 3 months since then.

He arranged B12 test, so once again I'm having 6 injection of vitamin B12 over a fortnight and then one ever three months. I've had four of the six so far and what a change to my well being they have been, it's lifted a dirt of brain fog and made me feel so much  better, albeit my 6 monthly hormone injections  are having effects on my day to day life

Funny how you can be as fit  ever  but a slip on icy steps sent me to my GP, who thought there might be reasons why I slipped and from that they discovered I had PC.

  • Hello  . I can only find 1 reference to folate supplementation amongst members on the site which is quite old so I did a quick literature trawl. A couple of things came out of it - it has no harmful effect in terms of progression for men who have had EBRT or Brachytherapy but there may be a risk for men who have had a Prostatectomy (evaluation was done on low risk patients).

The best way to get folate is with diet and this includes liver, brassicas, peas... The NHS have produced a guide to vitamins.

Cyril  has raised the importance of B12 as well so for anyone worried about energy levels and thinking they might have a vitamin deficiency it is important to check this out with your doctor first to find out if this is the case. In most cases a healthy diet is sufficient for our needs but if you do need supplements then the doctor will prescribe a level suitable for your condition and other health issues e.g. there is a warning about folate and people who have Crohn's disease. If you look at food labels you will find that things like some cereals and breads have folate supplementation.
