Hi I am waiting for first appointment with oncologist. Have any of you been advised on a dietary approach or supplements that may help? That could be from oncologist or elsewhere. Any evidence of efficacy out there anyone is aware of?

  • Hello

Remembering that none of are medically trained and you have not started any form of treatment yet, I would wait until you know just what treatment you will be having. The only advice I can give is to have a healthy diet.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi YY2718,

As Millibob has said, apart from having a healthy diet coupled with plenty of exercise to keep as fit as possible, it's probably best to wait until you have a specific treatment plan in place.

It's also best to run any supplements you may consider taking past your medical team in case they impact on any medications that they may give you as they may react with each other.

    Best Wishes

  • Certainly no expert here either and, as others have suggested, you really should discuss this with professionals before making any decisions. Dietary approaches taken will also depend on what your goals are too, eg. is to lose body fat, reduce cholesterol, etc.?

For me, and just in terms of maintaining my general health (and not specifically to tackle my prostate cancer), is following a whole foods, plant-based diet. I've done this for a number of years now and it's been a very positive change for me personally.

Lots of evidence to say that contributes positively to good overall health along with regular exercise. Dr Greger's book 'How Not to Die' and 'Forks Over Knives' are two examples of whole food plant based approaches to good health through nutrition.

I also try to minimise alcohol and ultra processed foods (or just have them as occasional treats).

It helps me feel that I'm doing something positive for myself and I feel a bit more in control of things.

As with all things in life, balance and moderation is key.

Wishing you well with your appointment.
