Hi all so todays the day we got our results after a very long wait and unfortunately Bryan does have prostate cancer and unfortunately the cancer has started to grow out of the prostate so consultant said surgery wasn’t a option as they still maybe a chance that even with removal they may not get it all so they have started him on hormone therapy and gonna have radiotherapy Aswel so waiting to hear from catterbridge hospital for treatment dates given a gelson score of 3+4 (7) all a bit of a shock and don’t really know bout taking it all in

  • Hello Clare (

Well, a Gleason Score of 7 isn't aggressive - did they give you Bryan's TNM staging?

The theory behind HT/RT is that the Hormone Therapy will deprive Bryan of his testosterone, this is the food for the cancer. Give that 3/6 months to work and then "zap" the prostate with Radiotherapy and this should kill the cancer cells dead. Stay on HT a little longer to mop up anything left.

    Here's two links for you:

    Hormone Therapy for Prostate Cancer

    Radiotherapy for Prostate Cancer

There are side effects and he needs to keep as fit as possible. As HT can weaken your bone structure a prescription for Calcium and vitamin D tablets is a must.

To me that sounds very much like a "Curative Pathway".

Any questions, feel free to ask - we are with you all the way.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian unfortunately not just a gelson score and 10 out of 12 biopsy’s taken were cancerous and that the tumour had started to grow outside the prostate and to start taking the hormones straight away and they will be in touch to start radiation therapy x

  • Hello Clare (

i am aware of what you said but the Hormone Therapy will start to work NOW and put the cancer to sleep. If you have the TNM staging that would give me a better idea - even though it's growing outside the prostate (your MRI said contained) it's very much treatable. Do you have the bone scan results?

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello

  • Thank you my Gleason was 7 and confined I'm on tablets for a month and had my first hormone injection will start radiotherapy in 4 to 6 months for now having injections monthly to see how I get on

  • Hello Clare

This is the NHS not at it's best. From the Prostate Biopsy amongst other things they get the Gleason Score and the TNM staging - I would suggest you contact the team you had the meeting with today for this information and a copy of the meeting minutes.

How they can tell you it's started to grow outside the prostate is a mystery as it wasn't on your MRI.

I know the diagnosis is a shock - BUT the cancer has now been stopped in it's tracks and the journey has well and truly started.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Clare

Staging is the most important point here, Gleeson not too bad and  he has started on HT to hopefully halt it in its tracks

If T3 then as you have said just outside the gland and still potentially curable

If T4 then it's spread elsewhere and does make it quite a bit more difficult.

So that's your question to them T3 or T4, they should be able to tell u that over the phone.

    All the best

    Steve
