9 months on from Zoladex

Hi everyone,

I have to say, my recovery hasn't actually gone 'to plan'. At present, my PSA is at 0.01, so all on the cancer front is good. BUT I'm still having horrific 'hot flashes', averaging over 16 per day (nearly 7 per night) and I've got absolutely no energy at all - I managed to walk to the local shops and back this morning - the third time THIS YEAR that I've achieved this, although the local shops are only 250 metres away!

Erection dysfunction is a joke - I haven't had a twitch out of the 'little man' since the start of Zoladex, although I've tried a pump, a pump with rings, Cialis and the little blue pills. I no longer want/need any sexual connection with my partner - which is just as well as she's 'moved on'. My last testosterone level was 0.8, far below what was expected/required but I'm still being told 'It'll all be OK soon..."

I'm now under the endocrinology department at my local NHS and have met with the local specialist, who informed me that I am not producing sufficient testosterone, but she doesn't exactly know why. I'm not that happy with her diagnosis, but I'm only a patient!

Just want to sleep, but another 'hot flash' will get in the way.

  • Hello Andy (

I can't do anything for your Testosterone, ED or lack of energy. I can however confirm I started with severe hot flushes, I was taking a towel to bed with me. sage tablets cured them for me - I started taking them and it took 10-14 days to stop, it worked and I am still on the sage - still no hot flushes.

If they don't work you GP can prescribe medication to stop them.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi AndyK,

I had my first monthly injection of Zoladex today.

I haven’t had a hot flush since the end of 2022 , however when they do reappear I will take Brian’s advice and try sage tablets .  Any particular brand Brian ? .

i hope your energy levels increase soon and the hot flushes disappear as 9 months on is long enough .

    all the best

    Tony

  • Hello Tony (

I am on "Menoforce" sage tablets from Holland & Barrett or Amazon. They are a tad expensive but boy do they work for me.

    Best Wishes - Brian.

  • Unfortunately, my GP and the specialists at The Marsden (Sutton) just told me 'It'll get better next year" - I tried sage tablets, I tried Ibuprofen, I tried acupuncture (very expensive!!!) and nothing worked. So far it hasn't improved AT ALL. I'm still getting an average of nearly 17 hot flashes during every 24 hour period, even though I'm 9 months on from the last Zoladex implant (3 months).

My GP just refers me to someone else, not confronting the problem - my lack of sleep!!!

  • Hello Andy (

I think you need to be more assertive with your GP - There are prescription drugs to stop them and no "it won't get better next year".

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • I've been having the hot flashes since near the start of hormone treatment (over 2 years ago) - they got worse at about the 3 month stage and haven't reduced since then. My testosterone level is still very low (at 0.8) and there's no change to the hot flashes, although I had my last Zoladex implant last March (nearly 9 months ago...)

  • I was close to being banned from the surgery the last time I visited - I was too aggressive, demanding an answer!!!!

  • Hello Andy (

Contact the GP's tell them it's a problem, you need a solution. If it's not happening then you need an appointment with the Practice Manager.

    Best wishes - Brian.
