After effects of Biopsy?

Hi All

I have my transperineal biopsy booked for next Thursday afternoon in Stamford Lincs.  I am 57, PSA 1.47 but DRE suspect so had MRI which showed suspect DRE was nothing but identified a potential pirads 4 lesion on the left side but fully contained to prostate.

I just wondered what after effects people had, are you able to sit comfortably or are you in pain for a day or two?  I'm supposed to be going somewhere the Saturday afterwards so hoping I'm not in too much pain to drive.

Thanks All

  • Well, my biopsy initially booked for the 30th January was postponed until today due to the MRI results not being passed from a private hospital to the NHS, but went ahead as planned today.  The staff at Stamford hospital in Lincolnshire were fantastic and warm and friendly to put me at ease.  In terms of the Transperineal biopsy, for me the most painful thing was the ultrasound probe up my bottom, the local anaesthetic stung a bit but once it had taken effect I didn't feel much of the biopsy itself.  Before I could go, I had to produce a significant amount of urine and have a bladder scan to show my bladder only had 100ml or so of liquid max, so took a couple of wees to accomplish this...  Pain wise, my bottom is sore and my perinium a bit sensitive, but wouldn't say painful.  NO blood in my urine at all and was able to drive home no problem (though my wife went with me in case I couldn't).  Now the 2 - 3 week wait for results.  As per the above, PSA is NOT elevated so according to my consultant if this is sinister it will be very early stage.

  • I was back in work the day after mine was done, just avoid any lifting heavy items, apart from that no problems. The needle was a bit painful and I could hear the samples being taken. The worst was waiting for the results to confirm outcome,  mine was a long 6 week wait, mine was confirmed stage 2 , with 2 growths

     Good luck with yours

  • You echo my experiences almost exactly, granted we are all different but we (you and me) have confirmed that it is not always any more than a minor discomfort and, depending on the person, somewhat embarrassing. In my case I joked with the nurse who sat by my side to reassure me and it all passed off OK.

Good luck with any following treatment that you may need.

I'm now six months post radiotherapy and have an undetectable PSA level and long may it stay so low. My PC journey is listed in my profile.

  • Hi,

Looks like I am one of the few who had a Trans Rectal. "On the 12th day of Christmas the NHS gave to me, a Trans Rectal Biopsy." It was December the 12th  2023. They were piping in Radio 2, Christmas music will never be the same.

I had 17 samples, one made me jump. The worst part was the young Doctor trying to get a needle in my wrist. The experienced Nurse suggested he try another site.

The Nurse was great, she saw my Harley Davidson tattoo and asked if I had a bike, after i confirmed I have, she told me her ex husband was a Hells Angel, and she took my mind off the whole procedure talking bikes.

They kept me in for a couple of hours afterwards with Tea, sandwiches and cake. When I proved everything was ok, i was allowed out.

I have to say I was dreading the the procedure, I read the NHS information leaflet and exclaimed WTF!!!  it read like something out of a medieval torture chamber. Your going where and doing what!! I was so stressed out on the day we went to the wrong hospital Doh!. Luckily got to the right one in time.

But it was not half as bad as I had built it up in my overthinking mind. It really didn't hurt, and I was back to normal same day.

One thing is, I had read that after a prostate biopsy there may be blood in your semen. Well, I tried it out the day after, just to make sure it still worked, and it was like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. So don't be alarmed, it gradually returns to normal. However now, 10 months on from a Radical Prostatectomy, I dry fire, which is another story.  GrinningThumbsup

  •   the nurse didn't say "It's only going to be a little prick" did she?

  • When my father went into the biopsy room, me and my mother were waiting outside and thinking how painful it would be for my father. After few mins he came smiling out of the room and I was really surprised  !

Exactly after 12 hrs he started complaining that he cannot pee and his bladder is full. He was in terrible pain, we rushed thru the hospital, every second to reach to the hospital was so agonizing,  he was crying , I was really scared.

The doctor did the ultrasound and told since we did the biopsy there is swelling we need to put the catheter in.

Once the catheter was in and all bowl was made empty he felt relief.

    • I suggest if u could stay in hospital or close by should help
    • Drink plenty of water to avoid any blood clots
    • Stay strong
  •   when I had my biopsies (trans-perennial), it was the fear of the unknown that got me.

When I was put in stirrups I thought f*** (or words to that effect).

The nurse who basically held my hand all the way through was great.  She never complained once about my squeezing her hand at first.

No tea and cakes for me though.  You deserved them!

  •   I was flinching reading your post.

Hope your father is ok now.

  • It's been 8 months now and he is currently on HT. With God grace everything is fine, he is doing his daily routine normally . I do not know what lies in coming months put i am being positive.

Recently he has started feeling pain between the fingers, it may be one of the side effects of the treatment

  • Hi my husband had his biopsy on Tuesday , he said it really wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be and that dr and  nurses were fantastic.  He even came out smiling . He said just leave your dignity at the door . He had no pain or discomfort for an hour , just time to get home , then he was uncomfortable not pain he said . He relaxed all evening had a couple of paracetomol , and his urine was the colour of rose wine he said . He slept ok , but was desperate for wee the next morning and it lasted forever he said , wee was back to normal colour , he was still a little uncomfortable he said , we went for a little walk with the dog about 20 mins then he had a sleep and was able to go to work in evening , next night he couldn’t sleep and the wee was wine coloured again . We on Friday now and he’s still uncomfortable and weeing rose wine , just waiting for biopsy results now . Hope that is a bit helpful .
