Good Morning  to all on this excellent forum and in particular my fellow traveller Amnesiac, not forgetting Millibob and all who sail. Surgery over, home yesterday. Some pain in abdomen when sitting up, trying to follow Physio instructions to minimise discomfort and possible damage. The Catheter is manageable with care. Drink water as much as I can tolerate and weak tea. 3 days post op and feeling as well as I could have hoped for. Advice to take things slowly is good as it is major trauma to the body. I will continue to post on challenges and successes as they arise. Best wishes to all , regardless of the treatment journey you are on . Time for a short rest. Sight.

  • Hey Sight. Good to see you back. It will take time to get used to your new situation and rest in the first few days is vital. I remember the discomfort when trying to sit up or get out of bed or just moving generally. Hard to believe but over a short time, this improves massively. Hopefully you are getting loads of help and support as I would have been lost without this. I ate lots of veg and bran to keep things moving easily - that’s important. I am 3 weeks ahead of you and looking back to when I was in your situation, the difference is huge although I still can’t drag my own compression socks on. You will be me soon. I slept on my back for the first 3 nights until I realised there was enough tubing via the night stand to turn over both ways. Just take it easy, take pain killers and do everything slowly - you will feel a bit better every day.

  • Patience is going to be key. Support is crucial and like you I am fortunate in that respect. I might try the side sleeping in a few days. I hope your continence progress is continuing. When did you venture outside for a short walk? Thanks for the support and your advice.

  • My husband had this last November.  He was out for a very short walk/shuffle the day after he came home, then the next day went a little further (still slowly) and within a few days was walking quite normally.  There are limitations as the bag starts to fill, but as long as you listen to your body you should be fine.

As Amnesiac says, you will get more confident with the sleeping/tubing combination.

Take it easy and I hope all goes smoothly for you.

  • Patience indeed. I didn’t really venture out much until catheter removal as I was never really comfortable walking with it in. I remember a morning shower every day made me feel much better and I made sure I got dressed and at least tottered about in the garden. My recovery saw real progression after TWOC with movement etc. Continence continuing to improve and I know when I need to ‘go’. Still having a random spurt now and again so in big absorbency pads in the day but gone down to a small slip at night. Keeping up with pelvic floors (remember you can’t do them with catheter) will hopefully be the answer. Have sent you a friend request in case you want to chat off line, if not, no worries.

  • Happy days - all is well - you are doing great and will come out of this winning.

Just remember I still have my prostate!! but had a catheter for 10 months (see my journey for the gory details) so no pain no gain - just keep it clean and you will be fine - this journey is a "couples journey" and at the end of the day the support you get from your partner - well -you just don't realise how much they do for you.

Listen to your body - your team and your partner and you will be great.

Your posts are an inspiration for anyone thinking of surgery - keep it up.

    Best wishes - Brian Thumbsup
