Ok, yesterday, I had a chat with the oncologist and the Cancer Research chappie to discuss my treatment

I’ve been on hormone treatment since just before Christmas (bicultamide at first and then implants (can’t remember the name of them). The treatment they’ll assess me for is SBRT. The plan is for me to have the ‘dual shots’. This is where they target the prostate and the pelvic lymph nodes.  The good thing about this is, that it’ll be 5 treatments over 10 alternate days. The only caveats are, that there’s got to be a clear shot at the cancer. And, the cancer has to have stopped growing If there’s another organ in the way, they won’t be able to do it. However, all is not lost and if they can’t, there is another treatment (sort of ‘SBRT light’) but this is over 20 days instead of 30 so, still better. There was a post on here where someone had their PSA rise, after being on hormone treatment. I must admit to a bit of concern when I read that. However, I had a PSA test, while I was there and the results came in this morning and the hormones appear to have stopped it growing. My PSA was just a tad under 16 when I was as diagnosed and it’s now 0.15. I’m now in the sausage machine so, a call will come next week to book me in for what I call ‘targeting scans’ and as long as there’s no bits in the way, ‘we’re cooking with gas’!

  • Hi Axel H thank you for the update, great to see hormone therapy is working well, your PSA  is down 99% and you have treatment options coming up. Don't worry about a PSA rise while on HT. It's called a bounce, a one off blip  not uncommon but nothing to worry about. good luck in the sausage machine next week, take care.

  • Hi Eddie.
I was a bit concerned when I read the post where the PSA was rising. I was going to ask about a PSA test when I had my consultation but the researcher beat me to it. Anyway, any worries I had have gone since getting that result.

  • good to hear, take care.

  • Good Morning

That indeed sounds like a plan to me - the Hormone Therapy kills off your testosterone which if you like is the "food" for the cancer, hence the reduced PSA. The SBRT is to kill the cancer cells for good, without killing off anything else.

It's a great feeling having a plan after all the waiting - I hope all goes well - keep us posted please.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian. The expected results are now ‘curative’. Whereas.before there was another bit of jargon used that didn’t say that!  Hopeful and confident of a good result after the treatment

  • "Curative Pathway" Those words uttered by my oncologist have helped me throughout my journey.

.Crack on - you are doing great.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi all.

Ok. I’m now in the ‘sausage machine’ and going through the process. So, I’m the ‘PACE NODES, I’ve signed all of the consent forms and my PSA results indicate that the cancer has stopped growing. I’ve just had an appointment to go to radiotherapy on 29 of April to discuss the low-down on what I need to do WRT pre-treatment, such as diet and enemas/purgatives. While I’m there, I’ll be given a date for the targeting scan and get my targeting tattoos done!  I’m told that once that’s done, my SBRT will follow quite quickly!

There’s been a few posts WRT hormone treatment - (which I’m still on. I started on tablets but now have the implant and due for my next one soon). I get hot flushes quite often and I find it difficult to sleep. However, it’s a small price to pay for slowing down/stopping the growth of the cancer. I’ve also been prescribed tamsulosin because I was still having the ‘waterworks’ issues. They have reduced but, I’m still having slow-flow and getting up several times in the middle of the night issues. This will need further investigation/treatment  but, it’s secondary to the RT at the mo.

    End comms

  • Hi Axel - PSA reading of 0.15 and you haven’t even started radiotherapy yet.  That is an EXCELLENT result!!!    AW
