Hot flushes

Hello everyone,

My partner has stopped hormone therapy because it made him feel terrible.

He now has back to back hot flushes and is finding his life unbearable.

Does anyone have any advice,  he's started antidepressants to try and help,  but if anything it's made things worse.

He has decided not to have the radiotherapy.

Thank you

Charlotte

  • Hello Charlotte - and a warm welcome to the Community and the Prostate Cancer forum.

I am so sorry to read that your partner has had issues with Hormone Therapy and has decided not to undergo Radiotherapy.  May I ask a couple of questions if I may:

    * Do you have your partners diagnosis - (Mine is Gleason 9 (5+4) T3a N0M0) to give you an example.

    * I assume his initial treatment path is Hormone Therapy coupled with Radiotherapy.

So as you may well be aware, Prostate Cancer lives on testosterone which is the cancer food. If he's no testosterone it can't grow and it dies off - that's why you have Hormone Therapy. Yes it comes with side effects - we don't all get them all - I am 22 months down this path (you can read my journey by clicking the icon of the beach).

I did suffer from some intense hot flushes but Sage Tablets cured mine - they don't work for everyone but they do for some.

Stick with us - let's see what we as a group can do for him - if you start me off with the information I have asked for above let's see how we can help.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Charlotte

My husband is on hormone therapy and does suffer from fatigue. His hot flushes were pretty bad and kept him awake at night. I know a lot of the guys use sage capsules which controls it for some but they didn’t work for him. He spoke to the Consultant who prescribed Cyproterone tablets and he hasn’t had a hot flush since. Maybe he could try the sage tablets first. I am sure some of the group will be along with recommendations soon. I hope he gets it sorted out soon, they were definitely making my husband very miserable.

    Good luck

    Linda

  • Hi Charlotte,

My husband also had a terrible time with HT but he is a lot better now. Try chill pillows that you can get from Amazon, they were absolutely amazing. Also, Menofirce, sage tablets from Holland and Barrett are also brilliant My thoughts are with you, but hopefully these will work. Take care Lynne

  • Thank you, will give them a go.

Yes these are the ones I use - I think they are expensive - but they work for me!!

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Charlotte

For hot flushes, I took Provera available from the doctor, ask about them.

    Stay safe

  • I had my  2nd Prostap injection about 2 weeks ago.No flushes till then, since seem to get none in the daytime, but,a few in the middle of the night, especially if i sleep on my right hand side.Weird ? Dont take anything yet as they only last a minute or so. Why in the middle of the night, can it be caused by dehydration? as I drink plenty of water in the day till early evening. Good luck to all concerened.

  • Hi everyone,

I'm now four weeks past my second Prostap injection and have hot flushes reasonably regularly including some at night. They are not particularly annoying or disruptive to my life but I would like advice on which of the Sage products to try to see if the 'flushes can be minimised. I've looked on the Holland and Barrett website and see a number of options, your advice would be appreciated.

  • Hello

I am a Holland & Barrett "Menoforce" man. They are a tad on the expensive side but they work for me. (other suppliers are available).

I hope you get something sorted.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello Oscar 2023.

We cannot get sage tablets where we live but my husband has found 2 cups of sage tea a day in the morning has done the trick. His hot flushes were pretty bad after each prostap implant for about 2 weeks but have almost completely disappeared since having his cups of tea. He has also found that he quite likes the taste of it.

I hope you find a solution.
