Hi All

My husband was diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer (Gleason 8) not curable but hopefully manageable. He has had chemotherapy and radiotherapy which finished in June this year. His last PSA decreased to 0.2 after treatment. My question is that he is receiving HT every 12 weeks and although at the time of starting HT last year he was having hot flushes twice a night but they seemed to have stopped since his last injection at the beginning of November this year, does this mean that they aren’t working? A very worried wife

  • Hi, if it’s any help, I too have 3 monthly hormones, I’m on the 5th one now. It started last July. Just had my session with consultant and mine is also now 0.2! So we are similar.
over the last 6 months it seems the hot flushes have reduced, still get them but rarely, so I’m guessing we get used to it. I still cry at sad movies, given up watching news too.
    Hope that helps.

  • I had chemo and radio 6 years ago (Gleason 9) and have been receiving HT every 12 weeks since (over 25 jabs!). Some days I am really aware of hot flushes and other days I am sure I get them but it just doesn’t register.  We are all different, but in my experience getting hot flushes is not a good or bad sign.  I was convinced a few years ago that the implant hadn’t gone in, but my PSA remained low.  Does the HT have any other noticeable side effects for him and has anything else changed?  If not, don’t worry, just tell him to enjoy not having hot flushes while it lasts!

  • Many thanks David2017. Your words are very much appreciated. No, he doesn’t have any other side effects, in fact, he looks amazing.

  • Hello   The side effects of HT affect us all very differently - I am 22 months down the line and now have no side effects now apart from tears! - yet in the early days I had all sorts - itchy skin, loss of hair, moobs ,hot flushes. Now all I do is cry at the drop of at hat.

Your husband will be on regular PSA tests and these are the indicator of how well the HT is working so 0.2 is great.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi journeyone i am also  gleason 8, T3b latest psa 8.4 > 0.08 "treatable". been on HT for 19 months, like the other guys had most of the usual side effects which apart from fatigue were a small price to pay for the possible benefits. my hot flushes started as summer began so probably not the best time but stopped after 2 months, I am pretty much physically, "apart from man boobs",  where i was pre HT RT all side effects history. As my hot flushes lasted such a short time i mentioned it to my LCN she told me i was lucky as some guys have them for years, so to answer your question stopping hot flushes is good news and absolutely nothing to worry about. take care.

  • Hi edfiel, many thanks for your very kind words, they are very much appreciated and I feel so much reassured.
