Nephroscopy wound not healing

Hello All,

When my Dad was first diagnosed in January he needed nephroscopy tubes inserted to his kidneys to help take pressure off his bladder. His prostate shrank with treatment and he was able to have the tubes removed around May time. One wound has healed but the other hasn't.

Does anyone have any experience of a long term nephroscopy wound and if so, has anything worked to help heal it?

  • Hello Gwen_R

Welcome to our little section of the forum. I see no one has responded to your post and this may well be that we have no forum members with the same/similar issues.

By me replying it will "bump" your post back up to the top and more people will read it.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi

If you search for the word “nephrostomy” by the little magnifying glass at the top of the page, you will find all the posts where people have talked about this procedure. It is carried out in various different types of cancer, and you may be able to connect with others who have gone through this, though not necessarily for prostate cancer. Since you question is a general one, you may find some helpful advice.

In addition you could also ask your question in the “ask an expert” section of the community where a nurse may be able to offer some advice. If you click on this link it will take you there.

    Ask the Expert

I hope you can find some help with this. Has your dad asked his treating team for their advice? His CNS might be able to offer some help.

    Sarah xx

  • Hello Gwen R.

As Brian has bumped this up then can I offer a suggestion from a microbiologist's point of view. Normally the wounds should have healed pretty quickly after removal of nephrostomy tubes, particularly if you were given broad spectrum antibiotics at the time. It sounds as if the wound has picked up a more resistant bug at some stage and no it is nothing that your dad has or hasn't done, it can just happen. I recommend that he goes to his doctor who will probably do a blood test as well as take a wound scrape which can be cultured and challenged with a range of antibiotics which should identify the best one to clear it up. This may be with a topical cream or with a systemic antibiotic. In the meantime keep the wound clean and covered, keep an eye on his temperature and if he feels unwell then seek urgent medical attention.

You are obviously looking after your dad well and hope he recovers soon and let us know what happens as it may be of use to someone else.

  • Thank you Sarah, I'll have a look.

  • Thank you Alwayshope. Dad's due to have a second swab soon. He had one a while back but nothing showed up. He's been passed between departments and they've tried using silver and later some kind of honey to try to help close it but I feel like there must be an underlying reason it's not closing at this stage.

Thank you for your help. I'll suggest Dad asks the medical team for a blood test as well as the swab.

    Best wishes.
