Steroid Prednisone

Hello just putting this question out there and hoping for information.
My partner is still in the early stages of recovering from RT, one of the main problems he is having atm is fatigue. At the moment he takes 5mg of the steroid Prednisone to deal with any side effects of the HT treatment “Abiraterone” we are wondering about the dosage and should it be higher to give him more energy?
Previously he was prescribed 10mg but our fear was that as he is on both medications long term is it a good thing to start raising dosages of steroids? so we asked to keep it down. Now I’m wondering if that was a mistake.  Can I ask if anyone has any information about steroid use and how they are effected by it and what dose they are on please. Also I am keen to find alternative natural supplements that could run alongside his treatment to boost energy if anyone has any advice.
Best wishes to you all

  • The fatigue is the worst side effect of RT. I was exactly the same but had friends in my rowing club who made up a rota and came round every day to take me out for a walk. It was just a few hundred yards at first but we soon built it up to several miles. I am now over four years post-RT and walk at least 30 miles every week (having a new dog helps a lot).

It may seem strange but exercise is the best way to combat the fatigue. I certainly wouldn't increase the dosage of steroids without trying exercise first.

The 'C' word can have an odd effect on lots of people and it certainly sorts out your real friends from those who simply disappear as soon as it is mentioned.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.

  • Hi Seamus, I've read your profile and it's very inspiring, thank you for your reply as that's given me a boost.

Thats so true, you really do know who your friends are. I think it's sometimes not possible for a lot of people to understand this fatigue and his friends do seem to be standing back a bit lately. I also think some people have the opinion that it's very curable and common and not really a cancer to worry about.

My partner is an active man normally , badminton, gym sessions and Golf several times a week but not now. We've just been to the Lake district and normally we do big walks everyday, but we really cut back this time. We did a 6 mile coastal walk at the start just to ease in, normally my partner charges ahead with the younger members of the group, but this year he was struggling after a few miles and we hung back and took it easy. He was upset at his lack of stamina and energy and we ended up doing separate small low level walks through the week. Mainly he slept a lot of the time as he was exhausted. It's early days after the RT I know, as he only finished 20 sessions at the start of July and really it's to be expected.

Thank you for the advice I think a daily walk and back to the gym is a good plan for this week. See how that goes. Even though the steroid dose is very small and essential to combat the side effects of Abiraterone, keeping it low will be good and like you say "try exercise first"  We can keep the increase of steroid on the back burner for as long as possible.

Thanks again, having this conversation has levelled me.
