Radio Therapy Planning session advice

Have just had my 2nd planning session & both times have failed to have a full bladder so have been unable to move forward with the treatment plan.  This is despite the fact that I have been drinking copious amounts of water (around 2 litres) every day, along with the 350mil shortly beforehand.  Each time it's happened, it feels like I have failed an important exam & let myself down.

The enemas are doing their bit so no problems there, so am looking for any advice that may help for the next one which is booked for the 11th August.  I hate being late for an appointment so we always make sure we are at the hospital at least 1 hour beforehand & my partner thinks it may help to drink plenty of water whilst waiting before being called through.

Has anyone else struggled with this & have any suggestions to try?

Thanks for your time Relaxed

  • Hi

    And welcome!

Can't recall how much water I had to drink before my planning meetings but before the actual RT sessions I had to drink 600mil. This should have been, in my understanding,  the amount I drank at the planning sessions. All this was in addition to the 2L we were told to drink daily. From memory others were drinking different amounts.

Hope this helps and good luck!

    Regards

  • Hi Stuart,

    Thanks for replying.

That's interesting about the 600mil as I was expecting to have to drink around 500 mil, but apparently it is 350 mil which they carefully measure out in a jug rather than use a standard bottle size (might be to do with my height & weight).  I did ask about them giving me a larger amount & this is something that they said they will consider at the next appointment, but they have a protocol to follow.

    Fingers crossed for next time.

Good luck with getting fit again soon.

    Kind regards

    Brian

  • Hi Brian

Sorry to hear of your issues, that's a new one on me.

I had my Radiotherapy at Christies in Oldham and they appear to be the only place in the UK where RT for prostate cancer is done empty bowel / empty bladder.  No pun intended but it's a piece of piss!!

It is a strange old world as I started my prostate cancer journey being admitted to hospital with a bladder that would not empty.

Any way back on topic - I hope you find an answer and are fine on 11 August.

    Best wishes

    Brian.

  • Hi Brian

I really can't get my head around RT with no enema or bladder full of liquid! As you say piece of p**s compared with others. I was only kicked out once from the sunbed because my bladder wasn't full enough - others were more unlucky!

  • Hi Stuart

Although I did do the enema business, didn't do the liquid bladder thing

I did ask a couple of times  why some had to drink before RT and some didn't and never really got a decent answer except perhaps 'everyone's different '

  • Hi Steve

I asked as I am nosey. The Radiographer said "a full bladder lifts the bladder off the prostate and we can see it, an empty bladder relaxes it and we can see it - it's easier for you men to empty the bladder"

How true it is I don't know - but it was easy just having a wee before the "sunbed"

  • Thanks Brian, suppose that makes some sense, just also wondered if depends on where the tumour is in the gland......... anyway suppose we don't need to think too much about that now

    Cheers

  • Hi Stuart and Steve

Agreed - I think I might start a line in "Been there - done that" T - Shirts with a picture of a Walnut on them. I will start with XXXL the way the HT is working at the moment with me.

    Best wishes

    Brian.
