Hi all,
I will soon be embarking on my Radiotherapy Treatment for my PC & have been researching information about a food diet that will be nutritional & also reduce potential unpleasant side effects.
There does seem to be a differences of opinion about the types of food & drink to avoid & maybe I'm overthinking it a bit.
Perhaps I should not change anything yet & just see how my body reacts to the treatment & consider changing diet if side effects affect me badly?
We love my fruit & veg, we have it every day which normally would be good but may be not with 4 weeks of RT.
Any advice others can give with their experiences will be appreciated.
Cheers to you all, Graham
Hi Graham
Advice at my planning scan at Christies Oldham .
You don't want wind so try and avoid : Alcohol, Fizzy Drinks, Coffee, Green Leaf Vegetables, Beans and Pulses. I was a good boy cut out everything apart from Coffee - I just had one in the morning.
For me to give up beer was a sacrifice but I went 36 days without a pint!! I did feel good but my motivation was if someone is offering me treatment that is "curative" - then I will follow instructions to the letter.
I have to thank the NHS for quality treatment at Oldham - even the free tattoos and regular enemas!! I sailed through every session on the "sunbed" no issues.
6 months down the line post RT I feel great. Personal advice - stick to whatever diet your Radiology team tell you at the planning scan and keep exercising - at least walking a couple of miles each day because the fatigue will creep up on you!!.
I hope the above helps and you encounter no problems.
Kind Regards
Brian.

Thanks again Brian for all your support & advice & it's geat to hear you're doing so well post treatment.
We do try & get out for walks every day but rain has given us an excuse not to but as my teacher used to say all those years ago, I must try harder!
I'm just looking forward to removing that dark cloud over us & get back to a nearer to normal life ahead.
Thanks again my friend, Graham
Hi Graham
I hope all goes well at the planning scan on Friday and you get any questions you have answered. At Oldham we were given the dates for the Radiotherapy treatments (all 20 dates) at the planning scan, but Christies is a specialist cancer hospital and it's all done in house so to speak there.
Keep us posted as to your progress - I wish you well.
Best wishes
Brian.

It got in my view huge hill I must go back to walk around the whole park.Mind you it be sound of me saying come on do it and hill will not be sound of music
Hi Graham
In addition to Brian's list, Poole hospital told me to eat low fibre everything. Only problem I had was when I ignored the diet sheet and had a few sprouts and a couple of glasses of wine. Really wasn't funny!

Hi Brian, just returned home after NOT having my CT planning scan!
I had too much wind to proceed with my scan & after the second attempt, they gave me another appointment next week to try again.
I've always been a "windy bloke", I can wake in the morning & have loads of wind, both ends!
I'm going to have to re-look at my food diet & cut down on my veg intake but also change my actual eating process.
I know I tend to rush my food so am probably gulping in air when eating which is causing my excess wind.
The radiographer said it can be a common problem with patients that are vegetarian so it's nothing new to them.
Once again, any further advice from anyone here will be appreciated.
I'm feeling annoyed that I've got this problem because it could have a big impact on my on going RT treatments very time I attend.
Cheers all Graham
Hi Graham
That's not what you want at all. I had a word with Mrs Millibob who has just retired after 40 years as a Nurse.
She agrees that 50% of the excess air that causes wind is taken in when eating and drinking and rushing food and drink.
In her view (I always listen!!) the foods you need to keep the wind down are Eggs, Meat, Fish, Tomatoes, Berries, Rice and Carbohydrates.
I don't know how that suits your diet - I just hope you can sort things out. I am sure there will be other who have had this problem and I am sure there will be further advice.
Keep your chin up - I am sure there will be a suitable solution.
Best wishes
Brian.

Hi Brian
Leafy green veg was my Achilles heel - specifically sprouts.

Thanks Stuart, yes I would be interested to see your diet sheet.
The diet sheet the nurse gave me this morning seemed to be intended for people suffering from bloating & constipation, so perhaps she thought that's why I have excess wind & I'm certainly not one of those people!
The wife & I have had a long chat about diet since returning home.
Apart from cutting out certain veg, fruits & dairy, we thought we'd also try eating our main meal midday instead at 6pm.
Another thing we agreed was, not watching TV whilst eating main meal and simply concentrate on eating slowly & not swallowing air.
I think I need to make a drastic change in order to make sure I'm not turned away again especially when my treatment days begin.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
Graham
