Hi Folks,

We are playing the waiting game to hear from a doctor after shocking news. My husband had his prostate removed in July 2022. The first two follow-up PSA readings at3 and 6 monhts were basically zero. Yesterday he got a PSA resultof 1.6.  I am assuming that the doctor will order scans and then we will consider radiation or hormone therapy. Can anyone else who has had a similar experience validate that? He doesn't have an appointment with the doctor for 2 weeks which feels like an eternity right now because we don't know how to gather reliable information. Thanks so much.

  • Hello Churro, sorry to hear of your worries. I think that we are all living from one PSA result to the next with an underlying anxiety. I think you are doing the right thing in following up this unexpected jump in PSA. I don’t know enough about prostatectomy to provide any words of wisdom, I’m afraid, but I hope my response shows that you are not alone in this and that everyone will be keeping their fingers crossed for you both and hoping that this might be a blip.

my husband is having hormone therapy and had radiotherapy in Feb/ March this year. I was scared silly for him - especially of the radiotherapy. It was nowhere near as bad as I had feared! He followed all the advice he was given and the radiotherapy staff were nothing short of excellent!  20 fractions over 4 weeks seemed a long haul at the time but we got through it to the other side - just as you will! The hormone therapy does have side effects, too, but life can and does carry on! You learn to live with it!

I am sure others will be able to give you more medical information but I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in this. Let us know how things go?

  • Thanks a million!!  We can get through this together:)

Good reminder that the radiation is temporary.

First step is to repeat the PSA tomorrow. First time I’ve ever hoped that a lab made a mistake. I appreciate your support.

  • Hi Churro,

if you read my profile you’ll see my recurrence story.
I would expect your husband to have MRI and PET scans to establish where any cancer is.

I would then expect to have a treatment plan which will include at least one hormone therapy.

Whether he has radiotherapy or not will depend on scan results.

I had recurrence in September 2016 (although it was happening between PSA tests on 1/6 and 1/9/2016) and by the time all the scans had been done it was just before Christmas when I started hormone therapy. Hopefully the doctors will move at a faster pace with your husband.

It caused me extreme worry and stress waiting to find out results and plans.

I totally understand you will be feeling a lot of emotions just now.

I hope you get a clearer picture very soon.
