Hi all, I'm new here, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer last September and I have decided to have brachytherapy for treatment, which I received the call yesterday with the dates for the pre-op and the operation. Now my question is has anyone here had brachytherapy? If so can anyone give me an idea on how long will I be off work in recovery? And any info on side effects. Thanks

  • Hi Solo, I had Brachytherapy about 5 years ago when I was 69, unfortunately after the procedure I had to have a catheter fitted to pass wee but this doesn't happen to everyone, removed after a couple of weeks, but I went back to work after a few of days with no further side effects. Make sure you have have regular follow ups for PSA. My hospital/doctor didn't follow up and 5 years later my PSA had risen to 61, I am now on hormone therapy as the cancer had metastised to local lymph nodes the PSA  has now reduced PSA to 0.03 and I feel ok.

    Hope your procedure goes well

    Regards

    Peter

  • Had Brachytherapy Wednesday 26 July you will be told everything in your pre op so not going to go into into to much detail as may vary hospital to hospital.

The Team I had were great I am now on my fourth day. I had a catheter fitted during the op normal procedure went home then taken out the next day. You will find that you will be provided with Tamsulosin these will assist in fully emptying your bladder my case one taken the day before the op then one everyday for the next three months they recommend the evenings unless I wanted to be up all night.

You will find that you will be sore passing water but this does get better within a few days  you need to drink a glass of water around a hour every day to make sure that you do as you do not want to go into retention which would mean a visit to A&E and a pipe inserted. Going back to work  you may find that you need to go to the toilet every 30 mins and may not have full control in holding it or it may take a time for you to urinate as the flow maybe quite low.

All in All glad I was able to go down this treatment route.
