Can anyone who has had a radical prostatectomy tell me how long they had to wait post op to find out the results of their surgery please? My husband had his surgery over 8 weeks ago and hasn't been asked to do a blood test to check his PSA yet (despite us querying it) and we've just been told that his surgical results won't be available until his 3 month check appointment. Is this normal? The uncertainty and anxiety caused by not knowing whether it was successful or whether he is going to need further follow treatment due to surgical margins etc, is incredibly stressful.
I had my pathology report by phone about 8 weeks post surgery.I have my first PSA and follow up appointment end of this month, 8 months post surgery. I pretty much put it out of my mind in the waiting period, I expect the few days before I might have a little apprehension. Figuring if they were in no rush to see me this must be good, it would have been more alarming had they rushed me in for an urgent appointment!
That does seem rather long.
I had my first PSA check six weeks post surgery for a full face to face consultation at eight weeks, when I got full pathology feedback.
I’m not too sure what the routine cycle is for PSA tests beyond that point, because I then joined a clinical trial. As part of that trial, for the first year I had full bloods done every six months with just PSA checks at the other quarterly anniversary.
Having made it unscathed to eighteen months, I am now on half yearly follow ups, again including full face to face consultations as part of the trial, which lasts for five years.
Coming back to your original question, I do think you are being asked to wait too long. The eight weeks for me was purgatory. An extra month would have been too much. But I do know that there is significant variation depending on which NHS Trust you fall under.
