Hi all,
I'm currently awaiting a biopsy result after being told I have Prostate cancer....PSA 30 so fairly advanced.
I'm not somebody who can sit around twiddling my thumbs without doing something about it, so I've been carrying out research into how cancer cells grow and what can be done to slow them down.
I am looking for a diet that can make my body a less attractive place for cancer cells to proliferate. Currently, I am on a very low-carb diet as this has been identified as a possible way to starve cancer cells, most of which are hungry for sugar, but not all, apparently.
There's so much stuff out there it's difficult to know what to believe, a lot of it is guesswork.
During my searches, I found a scientific paper . It identifies vegetables which killed off cancer cells in vitro. It's quite detailed and identifies some real veggie stars when it comes to fighting cancer, however this doesn't necessarily mean they work as well when added to our diet, but it's a good place to start. Sadly, one of the stars is garlic, I tried this but it nearly cost me my marriage!......fortunately another star is the humble leek which my wife finds quite acceptable.
The paper takes 8 common cancers and tests 34 different vegetables against them, it makes absorbing reading and has the advantage of being professionally produced.
Apart from making sure the most effective anti-prostate cancer veggies form a major part of my diet, I have also ordered a lot of concentrated vegetable powders, broccoli, Brussels, kale etc, which I will mix into soups and make smoothies from.....fortunately I love Brussels sprouts, the other effect is losing quite a lot of weight, and there wasn't much of me to start with anyway, but hey ho...
I'm now looking for a similar paper which identifies the most effective anticancer fruits, got to be careful here because many fruits, bananas, pomegranates etc are quite high in carbs.
I hope similar minded people may find this helpful.
Good luck
Hi T
I looked into diet in a fairly big way when I discovered I had PC in 2013.
In the end I cut right down on red meat , dairy, alcohol, fizzy drinks, carbs to a more limited extent only because can't do without bread etc although do try just munching on brown bread rather than white. Part of the problem is u just don't know if its gong to help or not.
You mentioned vegetables which I think is a major point, eat as much as you can and not too much fruit because of the sugar although it is natural sugar.
So I think, just try and keep to a healthy diet , that has to help and also help keep other illnesses at bay,
Good luck
Steve
Hi Grundo,
Thanks for the advice.
2013?.....so you've been fighting it for 10 years.
It is difficult to stick to a low carb diet, I have found a gluten free bread which only has 7g net carbs/slice which is very palatable, although quite expensive, but I'm missing spaghetti and rice big time!....never really ate many potatoes/chips so no problem there.
I have always been fairly active, I'm retired but play golf three times a week, walk a bit and have regular gym sessions, but I've noticed a drop in energy since going low carb, apparently this is normal while your body adjusts. I used to run a lot, but a heart attack ten years ago and arthritis in my hip put a stop to that.
I have tried to increase my activity each day as apparently cancer loves a couch potato, I guess the more calories you burn the fewer are left to feed the cancer cells, makes sense to me.....just off to the exercise bike now....
Good luck
Hi a well balanced diet should give you everything you need, I try to avoid anything processed and eat small amounts of organic/ free range meat/fish and fruit and vegetables, pulses and try and avoid big carbs. Though I do crack for a good quality bread. I've been banging on for years to my partner who has now abandoned his stash of white pasta and secret pot noodles and all the other crap he has been eating. I know food is expensive but small changes are good. I had a friend that did research into milk years ago and she said 'promise me you will never buy cheap milk always buy organic" so just something as basic as milk can be full of chemicals as who knows what the cows are eating, same with chicken. So making a change to organic milk and eggs isn 't that much more. One thing I have always done is take a large amount of vitamin C a day. I take a massive dose of over 1000mg absorbent v c , you actually need less than 1000mg a day but I find I feel really well on it and my system ticks over nicely. All my blood tests come back with high immunity levels and I believe this is why. Humans don't retain vitamin C so if we are not eating enough things with it in we are in trouble. It's a great healer. If you eat too much you will just wee it out so theres no problem with overdosing. you could get stomach cramps though so best to start on 500mg. Of course you also need calcium and vitamin d if you are having treatment for cancer.
But you are right , you are what you eat and we can always do better.
