Had my surgery on 2nd May. Was down for nearly five hours and all went well. I was in hospital for 2 days, as they could not get my pain under control. Coming up to 4 weeks post surgery and am doing ok. Starting to walk a bit further each time I go out. Having a few incontinence issues but was to be expected.
Would love to hear from anyone who has gone through surgery and how they are coping.

Colin.

  • Hi Colin,

Glad to hear that you are getting on OK.

I am fortunate to be just past my nine year anniversary of Cystoprostatectomy, it does get easier if you maintain a positive attitude which it sounds as if you are doing.

"Life isn't about waiting for the Storm to pass, it's about  learning to dance in the rain !" has been my mantra from day 1 -- it seems to work !

  • Hi Colin had my surgery on the 21st dec last year. Three nights in hospital was in a lot of pain for about a week. My sons took day about looking after me. No pain now but incontinence is a major problem for me very restrictive cannot go very far or do much. Urology have referred me to a incontinence physiotherapist but 14 week waiting list

  • Eight moths post. Ended up in hospital for 2 nights as I had the mother of a migraine the day after surgery. Stopped taking pain meds when I left the hospital. Back to all my activities at 12 weeks. Incontinence still and issue, but you get used to it and days out take a bit more planning, don't plan on losing time because of it. Hoping it resolves. Side effects are a nuisance, but I won't let them control what I can and cannot do. Better than the alternative! I am back flying, ride my motorcycles, hike up in the mountains. You just have to keep going. The cancer is what I have/had, it is not who I am.

  • Thanks, yes I am trying to stay positive.

  • Sorry to hear you are having trouble,  hopefully it will be sorted in time.

  • Sounds like a positive attitude is the way to go.

  • If one looks at the alternative, this is far less appealing.

  • Hi Colin

My husband had his surgery nearly 7 weeks ago  on 15th April. He stayed in hospital that night and was sent home the next day, less than 24 hours later with a catheter in situ and just paracetamol for pain relief. His op was in the afternoon, hence the overnight stay but the chap who went in before him in the morning, was sent home the same day! He then had to remove his own catheter at home 10 days later. We have his post surgery appointment via telephone coming up in about 10 days and we are both understandably anxious to hear the results and whether he will need any further treatment.

He is recovering physically pretty well now and is back to walking the dogs with me for about an hour and a half daily. He has also just started playing golf gently again this week with our son (although he has hired a buggy so far rather than walking the whole course just yet!) Emotionally he is mostly ok, but of course we are waiting for the results of the pathology and that is pretty nerve wracking. Incontinence wise things are slowly improving but he still wears a pad in the daytime just in case and has to get up a couple of times a night. He also wears pads at night which are still necessary.

I wish you well in your recovery on this difficult journey

  • HI Colin I had my surgery on the 21st Dec last year was in hospital two nights then home. However I was in considerable pain and could not get in and out of bed myself. After catheter was removed by the specialist nurse I continued with the pelvic floor exercises. However, Im finding the incontinence is still a big problem for me. Cannot go anymore than about 3 hrs before I have to change the pad so this is very restrictive. Managing the walking ok now doing about 6 to 8 miles per day and can get out on my motorbike, although getting on and off can be difficult. The Hospital has put me on the waiting list for a incontinence physio 14 weeks. Was hoping to be ok with the water works by now

  • Hi Rob, sorry to hear about the incontinence issues, hopefully you get your appointment soon and that they can help to sort it out

    All the best,

    Colin.
