Anxiety waiting for surgery

My husband was diagnosed with PC 9/1/23 after raised PSA, MRI and biopsy all discovered at the end of last year. His grading is 3+4=7 and cancer was found in 23 of the 24 biopsies taken. We have had 2 meetings with specialists - the first one where the news was broken to us and we were given the treatment options, the 2nd one to discuss our decision to go for surgery and what to expect. At this last appointment on 7/2/23 we were told surgery would be anytime between 2-5 weeks time. It was also explained that whilst there had been no sign of spread on the MRI or bone scans and that it was relatively low grade, there was a lot of it (as indicated by the 23/24 samples testing positive). He told us that there was a possibility of needing radiation after the surgery due to this. This understandably worried both of us, as we had put all our faith in the radical proctectomy providing a complete cure up until this point.  He did however indicate that he was still hopeful to be aiming for a cure.

We are now still waiting for a date for surgery, despite having chased the hospital twice for updates. It was his comment re there being a lot of the cancer that has worried us so much and we can't help being concerned that the wait is increasing the risk that it will have spread outside of the prostate the longer we leave it in there.

Does anyone else have experience of this situation and how long is it usual to wait for surgery in these circumstances. Also I would be interested to hear any experiences of needing radiation after surgery - ie: is this common?

Thank you in advance for any replies

  • Hi Woolly

It looks like non aggressive but a fair bit of it. The size 16mm  is similar to mine when I started RT in 2017.

Do you know if tumour is near the capsule edge.

Good that Gleeson and PSa Def lowish.

Yes sometimes RT is needed after surgery, was going down the RT route suggested at all, instead of surgery.

Unless the tumour is about to break out of the gland edge then waiting a few weeks is ok as non aggressive type

See what others say, just my thoughts

    Good luck

    Steve

  • Thanks Steve. Yes he was offered RT or surgery and it was explained that both have similar success rates at this stage . However we decided on surgery after hearing that there was still an option of RT after surgery if the cancer came back, whereas it was not usually possible the other way round. (I think he also just wants the damn thing out of him!) They haven't mentioned whether it is near the edge or not - but I can only assume that given how much was found - it is possible? Argh -we just want them to hurry up' as it's hard knowing t's in there and  currently receiving no treatment for it.

    It's tough isn't it!

  • yes, that's probably one of the best reasons to go for surgery because u can have RT afterwards if cancer returns, very difficult the other way round.

Suppose more likely to be near the gland edge because of size  but not def.

Anyway u have decided so just go with it , I'm sure things will be ok.

    best wishes

    Steve

  • Hi woolly, I have not had an operation, but on of my friends was diagnosed 18 months ago, had the op in October, RT December and January, and he is pleased he made that decision, he still get a check up every 3months for 2 years.

    All the best Ulls

  • Hi Woolly. It looks like we are on a similar treatment path, my surgery is booked for 22nd March which will be 4 weeks from making that decision.
I guess the surgeon has to make you aware of worst case scenario. Another 6 weeks of waiting post surgery to see what pathology comes back with, means we all face the possibility of needing further treatment after surgery.
Wonderful advice and support from this forum has got me into taking one step at a time on this journey, sometimes much easier to say than do!
Hope all goes well for you both.
    Daniel.

  • Thanks Daniel. I guess what we are both struggling with right now is the wait for a surgery date. Having made the decision following our initial consultation 9 weeks ago on 9/1/23 and then again when we reiterated the decision at our next meeting with the surgeon 5 weeks ago on 7/2/23 - we still don't have a date yet. We just want to get on with it and the thought that it is relatively large just makes us both more anxious the longer it is left in there without any treatment.

I wish you the very best in this horrible journey

  • Hi Woolly, You have been waiting for a long time! The waiting for results and dates is almost unbearable at times. Your thoughts can take you to some very dark places.
I hope you get a date very soon (I have heard of people making themselves available for a cancellation should one occur)
Very best wishes to you both . Daniel

  • Hi woolly,

my husband has decided to have surgery to ‘get rid’ of cancer but he has mesh from a hernia op 20 yrs ago over the area the op id meant to take place so possible bowel problems warned as may need to op via small bowel. He has also been recommended to lose weight to ease risk of incontinence after so has been told the op won’t be until May. Surgeon has said the cancer shouldn’t spread outside by then. Hoping you get a date soon.

  • Hi I had my prostate removed with the da Vinci robot January 22. I said to my surgeon that I had an umbilical hernia with mesh so he said he would be very careful removing it which he did. But four months later the hernia returned so had another successful operation. When I told my surgeon he said sorry it can happen, but I’m not complaining at least the cancer is gone. Best wishes Laurence

  • Hi Holby Doc, that is so reassuring to know that the surgery went well. Could I ask how long ago you had the original hernia op with mesh put in?
So pleased your cancer has been removed. It seems every hospital is so different with waiting times. My OH’s PSA was originally detected as high back last September at a well-being check & we are still waiting for treatment to start in the form of the RP. Praying C will not have spread when they finally operate in May.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post.
