Hi all, does anyone know much about permanent seed brachytherapy? My dad who has been recently diagnosed hasn’t been given it as an option. He was talking to someone at a support group who had it and is doing very well afterwards. I’ve looked it up online and it says it’s suitable for men whose cancer hadn’t spread and is localised within the prostate which is the case for my dad. Any advice welcome x
Hello Missy. I don’t know enough about brachytherapy to give you much info. We met someone who had recently had it and seemed well pleased with it. We asked the oncologist and he told us that his hospital trust does not offer it but he would refer us to one about 60 miles away and that this could mean a delay in starting treatment. My husband opted to go for external beam RT. I think he said brachytherapy is done under a general anaesthetic - another consideration!

yes, must admit, would probably steer clear of anything involving GA unless essential
Mount Vernon does it under regional anesthetic (spinal block) unless you really want it done under GA.
Hi Missy
I had brachytherapy at Addenbrookes Hospital about five years ago which was carried out under general anaesthetic, I had no side effects but unfortunately I didn't receive any follow up check ups and the cancer had come back and spread to some lower lymph nodes a year ago..
So it's important to have regular blood tests after the procedure to monitor PSA.
