Surgery or radiation?

  • Morning Boki,

Welcome to the Prostate Cancer forum.

Has your father's Oncologist recommend any option?

    I was a T2, Intermediate risk, Gleason 3+4(7), 9/29 biopsies positive.

I was unsuitable for surgery so I had the Hormones and Radiotherapy option.

Now 15 months after my last Radiation session I am in Remission.  In 2 weeks I am hoping to celebrate 1 year in Remission.

Hope your journey is a smooth one.

  • Hi Boki

    Couple pf main points here

Surgery best if cancer contained in the gland, looking at your stats it should be,

Things to watch out for are side effects ie surgery,  possible ED and urinary issues , not always and sometimes they clear up over time

Radiotherapy, no major issues , some problems during treatment but these tend to go away after treatment finishes . If on HT as well then more likely to have side effects but again tend to  go away over time although  HT can be offered  for some considerable time.

One downside to RT is that surgery very difficult if cancer returns  RT after surgery is OK /

Do look online as loads of info on there.

  • Age 75 is the usual cut-off for prostatectomy, but it can be less if the person isn't very fit, or has other health problems. Prostatectomy is major surgery right in the middle of the abdomen, and will take time to recover from. It has a higher risk of urinary incontinence and erectile incontinence. He should ask what these risks are in his case.

Radiotherapy is less taxing on the body, but the associated hormone therapy is taxing for some men, so I would ask how long he would need to be on it.
