Very low PSA

I have just completed 20 sequences of radio therapy with a final PSA of 0.03. The interim result midway was 0.241 and the initial was 3.09  before treatment. Meantime I have had 3  monthly shots of Firmagon  for my hormonal treatment.

I have read that a level below 0.1 could be due to too low testosterone which could be due to the hormone treatment  and I wonder if anyone else has had this problem

  • The testosterone levels should be low anyway.  Mine was 0.045 when I finished my 20 fractions of VMAT Radiation.

13 months after my last Radiation session, my testosterone levels are still virtually nil.  Finally off the Hormones and in Remission.

I get my PSA levels done today, then hopefully on 15th February I will be one year in Remission.

I'm sure there's nothing to worry about.  Maybe someone else will come on and reiterate this, (hopefully).

    Best of luck.

  • Hi Castor

PSA during RT doesn't mean that much particularly  if on HT. Obviously the lower the better so .03 is great.

The time to watch it is when u come off the HT because it could rise at that point, but obviously not def.  as long as overall there is no upward trend then everything ok, U don't say when HT finishes but that is the time to watch the PSA levels, hopefully though everything OK.

    Best  wishes

  • Steve, thanks for the information.

I got worried because I had read that anything below 0.1 could mean problems with the pituitary gland and I was pleased to learn  that I was not the only one with such a low reading and no problems.

Good to know that you're in remission and I hope that it will never come back.

  • Castor,

I am waiting for the results from yesterday's PSA test.  It should be in sometime today.  I have the "airmid" app on my phone, and get access to my medical records.

I remember last time I could view my results the day after the test.

Not anywhere near worrying.  I think it was 0.1 six months ago, so still a way to go.

    Fingers crossed for you.

  • Hi Steve,

I was also of the impression that the lower the better, but I read on a site, that any value below 0.1 could be due to pituitary gland problems.

I had been told by the doctors that the rt may not kill off aĺl the cancer cells and the ht was needed to finish off the job. As you say, the critical time is when the ht comes to an end. Will any cancer ceĺls  have survived to grow back? I'll know that in three more months when I stop the Firmagon ht treatment.

Thank you again for reassuring me that there's no problem with the low value.

It will take a few months for the HT to leave your system so there is unlikely to be any change in PSA until at least six months after you finish your HT.

MY PSA was undetectable about two months after finishing RT and remained that way for nearly a year after my last Prostap injection. It's now been at 0.2 for a year and seems to be stable.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.
