It has been over 4 years since I started having hormone injections for Prostate cancer, which finished Sept 2019. I had Chemo and Radiotherapy which finished on the 31 October 2019. I have regular blood tests and my Testosterone is still almost nil, I have aches and pains in my joints and a lack of get upand go, interested in life is very low.  The oncology nurse says this is due to the low levels of Testosterone. Can it be raised without medication? kind regards, Brian

  • When did your hormone therapy run out (i.e. when would you have had the next injection if you hadn't stopped them)?

  • Hi Andy, I finished hormone injections in Sept 1019, 3 monthly ones, I am still having almost nil testosterone and hot sweats each night, thanks, best wishes, Brian

  • In that case, it looks like your Testosterone isn't going to return - this does sometimes happen after hormone therapy.

There is a long-standing concern about putting prostate cancer patients on to TRT (Testosterone replacement therapy) thinking this increases the chance of prostate cancer returning. However, more recent research has shown that providing you are believed cured and there's no evidence of disease, TRT doesn't increase the chances of prostate cancer returning.

So you need to ask for a referral to an andrologist to investigate why you have no Testosterone, and what might be a suitable treatment.

You may still run up against your oncologist refusing permission - that does happen. Also, your oncologist might think it's likely your cancer will return, in which case going on to TRT might make that happen sooner.

  • Thanks for your prompt reply, I did ask my oncologist about treatment to increase my testosterone and he said no, as it may cause the cancer to return, this was a year ago, so I will ask again. Best wishes, Brian
