A bit of a personal question, but how long after HT finished did it take to get any feelings down below. I’m due my last Prostap injection I’m March. How long before the drug is out of my system and I start to get some feelings back (if any). I am currently prescribed Sildenafil (50mg) which work well,  but would like to be able to get a spontaneous erection without have to plan things first.

thanks in advance

  • John, I had RT and HT in 2017. My libido and ‘performance’ didn’t recover after treatment. I had a relapse in 2020 and now have matastasized cancer in my lymph and bones. I’m on heavy duty lifelong HT now so rumpy pumpy is just a memory.

All that said, lots of people get over HT, I sincerely hope you do. I think I was just unlucky.

    Best of luck

  • Hi John,

Does it help to say "everyone's experience is different"? I suppose not.

You might not like me saying this, but the really important thing is getting back to some form of satisfactory intimacy, with your partner if you're lucky enough to be in a stable and supportive relationship. Erections would be a bonus. Prostate Cancer UK has a very good booklet and DVD on sex and relationships, which you may find helpful.

    Best of luck

  • Hi John

I had my last Prostap injection over a year ago ( 2 year course) and nothing much is happening downstairs. The cancer nurse at the hospital told me the effects of the Prostap will last at least as long as I was on it.

    Regards

    Trying to get fit again!
  • I did 2 years on Zoladex, which will be same as Prostap in this case.

My periodic PSA tests had Testosterone tests added after the last Zoladex injection. Nothing changed for 9 months after the last injection ran out (Testosterone stayed almost zero), and then the Testosterone shot back up to normal in the following 2 months. Body hair started growing, etc but probably took another 3 months for libido to return.

By the way, well done on keeping erections going while on hormone therapy - this does help prevent long term damage. Only around 20% of men can get erections on hormone therapy injections, although that percentage increases by an unknown amount when PDE5 inhibitors (such as Sildenafil/Viagra, Tadalafil/Cialis, etc) are prescribed.
