Uneasy with husband's decision

I've posted before about my husband (youthful 81) and his diagnosis.  PsA 15,  T3  N0 M0.  He has had a lot of medical intervention in the past few years, major RTA  then throat cancer (now in remission) . He has declined biopsy and radiotherapy and has agreed with consultant to 6 monthly PSAs and if it goes up suddenly ( about increase of 4 a year at present,) or reaches 30 he will go on hormone treatment . He has zero symptoms, is very fit and says he wants to enjoy whatever he has left - travelling, enjoying life   without hospital visits and tests.  I do support his decision but I do worry about this thing growing. I've asked him several times if he might consider RT but he is quite adamant he will not  he says if he was 10 years younger he would.  He had RT for throat cancer which was awful.  Am I being selfish, should I just keep quiet?

  • Hi MAM

Think I remember u from before.

Suppose if I was 81 I might think like your OH. He's had enough of treatment and of course HT is a fairly easy option if needed although don't  forget sometimes there are considerable side effects but not always.

Only thing I would say about RT is that Prostate cancer easier than RT for throat cancer.....from what I've read over the years.

I had RT and it was really very easy in some ways easier that the HT.

Hope that helps, see what others say

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Maybe he could reconsider the biopsy? as its a reasonably straight forward procedure and is over quick. That way you would know what sort of cancer it is, It could be a slow growing "3" that he could live with for years without it escalating.  If it was to come back with an aggressive "5" in the mix of scores you would have more of an idea of what he's dealing with. It seems a small thing to do for reassurence.

  • Madaboutmut,

As long as you are there for your husband...

I can understand him being unwilling to get treatment, especially after Throat Cancer.  Glad he's in Remission for this.

As you say, he is very fit.  If the consultant thinks that the 6 monthly PSA tests will be ok, I would go with that, see what happens when he gets his next PSA test done.

Hope everything goes well for you both.  We can't forget the effect all of this has on yourself.

  • Hi

I agree with Steve. The guys in the waiting room with me who were going in for RT on their head areas really had it hard. One guy was wheeled in as he couldn't walk from the car park. My RT was no where near as bad as theirs.

Don't let his previous experience colour his decision.

    Regards

    Trying to get fit again!
  • Thank you all for your comments. I've once again raised the question of biopsy/radiotherapy and he got quite untypically cross, and refused to discuss it. I suppose I'll just have to accept this is what he wants.  It's hard though as I feel like we are just waiting for a symptom to appear indicating things have progressed. Our daughters feel he has made the right decision for him  and I suppose I do too. I know he feels any treatment would only minimally extend his life  and that he would prefer quality over quantity
