Pain in base of spine - is disability permanent?

hi,

my husband has taken a bout of severe pain in base of spine for the last 4 weeks, which means he has had two hospital admissions for pain since Christmas. He was fully mobile before this. Now in bed except for toilet but he only gets a maximum of about 5 mins standing then requires to lay down in bed again with rescue sub lingual fentanyl.

MRI showed no spinal cord compression and treated with only opiates. They don’t have beds so no other treatment offered.

has anyone had this level of disability with pain that they have recovered from and can walk again?

much love,

Louli xx

  • Sorry this may not help but this made me think of a friend suffering with blood cancer who had something similar. My only thought is to double check that there are no mets or bone cancer on the spine that could get worse and need to be treated - so there is a chance of recovery.

  • Hi

louili I’ve sent a message got things wrong I do apologise, I have you mixed with another lady, once again I cannot say sorry enough times.

What I did for my back pain, I bought a back support one credited to the nhs so it’s fine to use, plus I bought a vibrating seat cover, for legs back upper back, all helpful. co codormol was my pain relief, I’ve just got some liquid paracetamol if he does not like tablets.

    Hope this helps

    stay safe

  • Thank you Sussex20…. I was fortunate to see a recent MRI this evening at the private surgeon appt. It did show some upper lumbar bone mets that we did know about and thankfully none in the base of the spine. So that’s that box ticked.

On examination he’s got 3 large haemorrhoids and his prostate is pushing into his rectum. To have an MRI this week and review after that. Piles will need to be treated surgically. The prostate may have been like that since the diagnosis but we need to compare scans from 18 months ago. Possible radiotherapy might be the next step to shrink it.

All in all it could’ve been a lot worse!!!

  • Hi Joe,

No worries re mistaken identity! I quite often wish I was someone else lol lol

see update below with Mr Sussex20 .. so not looking like spine problem after all… a bit worrying that the prostate is pushing into the rectum and is this new? PSA undetectable so we know believe he lifted a bag of blooming cement before Christmas and thinks it’s possibly herniated?? Anyway who knows but we will find out soon enough.

a back support is a great thing to have in any case. Good tip!
