3 years post-surgery and the cancer might be back

I had a non-nerve sparing robot assisted prostatectomy three years ago at age 64, and as cancer was found in a lymph node I subsequently had 6 months of hormone therapy and six weeks of radiotherapy. I developed lymphoedema in my right leg, and also had radiation proctitis that caused rectal bleeding, as consequences of treatment.

MY PSA was "undetectable" for a while, but has been gradually increasing over the last year. My oncologist sent me for a PET scan two weeks ago, and today they told me that there were "a couple of areas" on my spine that needed further investigation and they are sending me for a different type of scan (at a different hospital). The oncologist said they might be related to previous hormone therapy rather than signs of cancer. If they do find signs of cancer they'll prescribe more hormone therapy which is not a pleasing prospect.

I have to admit I'm feeling pretty upset by this news, even though I considered the possibility of bad news I had been hoping for an "all clear".

I hope some of you can cheer me up.

  • sorry to hear Angus, hopefully though the suspect areas could be clear on further investigation.

how much is PSA increasing by.?

If it was me I think I would start looking at clinical  trials if  cancer has  returned as wouldn't really fancy HT long term

There are quite a few new treatments out there especially for more advanced cancers.

Look at Cancerresearchuk.org searching under clinical  trials.

good luck and if you do go down that route please keep us posted as always helpful to know about these trials

    best wishes
